The first images of Rami Malek, known for his role in Bohemian Rhapsody, in a moving new LGBTQ+ film have been released. The film is set to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival.
Rami Malek, the Oscar-winning actor known for playing Freddie Mercury in the 2018 film Bohemian Rhapsody, is starring in a new movie called The Man I Love. He’ll be acting alongside Tom Sturridge (from The Sandman), Rebecca Hall (known for The Prestige), Luther Ford (The Crown), and Ebon Moss-Bachrach (The Bear).
In the 1980s New York City, actor Jimmy George is preparing for a potentially final performance, a story directed by Ira Sachs and co-written with Mauricio Zacharias in the film, The Man I Love.
Deadline revealed the first image from the film, showing Rami Malek as George demonstrating his acting skills by impersonating John Wayne for a group of friends.
The film tells the story of George during a remarkable time – facing serious illness and approaching death, yet still experiencing beauty and love.

Sachs’s latest film, his third in just three years, will debut at the Cannes Film Festival this Wednesday, May 20th. It’s been nominated for two top prizes: the Palme d’Or and the Queer Palm.
I recently learned that this film was shot in New York in just 28 days, but the director, Sachs, says the real work started 15 years ago! He drew a lot of inspiration from a French film about Van Gogh, directed by Maurice Pialat. That movie focused on the last months of Van Gogh’s life, knowing he didn’t have much time left, and it seems Sachs wanted to capture a similar feeling here.
According to the director’s note for the film, Sachs explained that during this time in his life, he was deeply dedicated to making art. He and the co-writer, Mauricio, intentionally created a story where death is a theme, but no one actually dies on screen—they focus on living life to the fullest.
Malek’s next major film, ‘The Man I Love,’ is slated for release in 2026. This follows his recent roles in the World War II drama ‘Nuremberg,’ as well as appearances in the Oscar-winning ‘Oppenheimer’ and the James Bond film ‘No Time to Die,’ which marked Daniel Craig’s final performance as the iconic spy.
