As a huge film buff, I’m thrilled to see Universal Pictures actually listen to the fans for once! It wasn’t just the studio getting nostalgic – we, the audience, really pushed for another Mummy movie, and it paid off! Plus, and this is the best part, Brendan Fraser’s career is having such an amazing comeback, and now he and Rachel Weisz are both confirmed to return for The Mummy 4. It feels like a dream come true!
Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, known together as Radio Silence – the team who made Ready or Not and the 2022 Scream reboot – will direct the new movie. Universal hasn’t revealed any details about the story or how it’s being made, but the news is already getting fans excited.

This isn’t just another movie sequel announcement for dedicated film fans—it’s a significant cultural shift. For years, Hollywood seemed convinced audiences wanted dark reboots, serious, artsy blockbusters, and movies with a strong focus on identity—even if it meant sacrificing classic adventure. But sometimes, people simply want a lighthearted, exciting, and heroic story where the main character is funny, overcomes obstacles, and saves the day, all without cringing at a poorly written script.
And few franchises embodied that spirit better than The Mummy series.
A Comeback Fueled by Fans
Brendan Fraser surprised everyone in Hollywood with his Oscar win for The Whale, especially after taking time away from acting to deal with personal and health challenges. Throughout the awards season, he consistently spoke fondly of his role as Rick O’Connell in The Mummy and hinted he’d be willing to reprise the part.
In a 2022 interview with Variety, Brendan Fraser said he wasn’t sure how a potential sequel would come together, but he’d definitely consider it if the idea was good.
Looks like someone finally did.
Fraser clearly gets what people loved about the original films, and understands why the 2017 reboot with Tom Cruise failed so spectacularly.
Fraser said making that film was challenging. He felt the original Mummy movies had a sense of fun that was missing in the newer one.

He also pointed out that the movie relied too heavily on horror elements. He felt The Mummy should be exciting and adventurous, but not genuinely frightening.
Modern Hollywood, take notes: thrills + humor > misery + “message.”
What Fraser accomplished with this film holds up better than many recent attempts to revive old franchises. This comeback feels genuine and well-deserved, unlike so many others that seem driven by what’s popular online and decided by corporate interests.
Universal’s Chance at Redemption
In 2017, Universal attempted to start a shared cinematic universe called “Dark Universe,” starring Tom Cruise, but it was a major failure. It became a clear example of how forcing a cinematic universe and taking things too seriously can backfire.

Rather than building a dark, interconnected universe of monsters, the studio seems to be focusing on what worked before: appealing main characters, exciting action, and a generally enjoyable tone – the kind audiences responded to before Hollywood decided that movies shouldn’t be fun.
The decision to include Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz in a potential The Mummy 4 indicates the studio is finally prioritizing what fans want, rather than dictating to them.
A Win For Classic Adventure Cinema
If this movie captures the same spirit as the first films—mixing comedy, impressive visuals, exciting action, and entertainment for the whole family—Universal could have more than just a sequel people have been waiting for. They might have stumbled upon a winning combination that Hollywood really needs: genuinely enjoyable entertainment without relying on sarcasm or negativity.
Following a long string of dark and serious reboots, a classic, fun adventure like another Mummy movie starring Brendan Fraser could be just what moviegoers are hoping for.

If The Mummy becomes popular again, it could show studios that audiences still love adventurous heroes who face danger with bravery, personality, and a sense of fun.
At long last, The Mummy is rising again. And this time, we’re actually excited to open the tomb.
