As a devoted cinema enthusiast, I’d put it this way:
Back in 1999, I was utterly captivated by “The Mummy”, a breathtaking adventure that blended elements of Indiana Jones and Jason Voorhees’ mythical quests. Directed by the brilliant Stephen Sommers, this modern take on the 1932 Boris Karloff classic breathed new life into the Universal monster genre.
Playing the daring adventurer Rick O’Connell was Brendan Fraser, and alongside him, the brilliant Egyptologist Evy (Rachel Weisz) added a strong female presence to the story. In their quest, they unwittingly revive the cursed mummy Imhotep (Arnold Vosloo), who had been entombed for 3,000 years due to an ill-fated love affair with Anck-su-namun (Patricia Velásquez). This cinematic gem kickstarted a trilogy that raked in over $400 million worldwide at the box office. A true treasure for any film lover!
At a recent event at Fan Expo Denver, Fraser discussed the lasting impact of the movie, alongside his Mummy co-stars Velásquez, John Hannah (portraying Jonathan Carnahan), and Oded Fehr (depicting Ardeth Bay).
Fraser stated that people frequently tell him, ‘Because of the movie ‘The Mummy’, I’ve been inspired to pursue a career in archaeology or history.’ This film seems to have affected people deeply and brought about personal transformations. It happens everywhere he visits, making it a heartening reminder of the film’s ongoing impact. He expressed gratitude for this response.
In 2001 and again in 2008, Brendan Fraser reprised his role for “The Mummy Returns” and “The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor” respectively. The former was directed by Stephen Sommers, while the latter was helmed by Rob Cohen. It’s worth noting that Sommers also directed “Van Helsing,” a movie starring Hugh Jackman, for the studio in 2004. When a moderator inquired about Universal creating a ‘monster universe,’ Fraser responded with uncertainty, stating, “I honestly don’t know.
Tom Cruise is reported to have been involved in the production of the 2017 Mummy reboot, where he played soldier of fortune Nick Morton and Sofia Boutella portrayed Ahmanet. As Fraser stated, making this movie was quite a challenge, as he attempted to bring it to life no less than three times.
As a movie enthusiast, I recall the sweltering summer of 2017 when Tom Cruise’s pricey Mummy reboot raked in an impressive $410 million globally. However, the steep production cost of approximately $345 million ended up being a financial setback for the studio, casting a dark shadow over their ambitious project – a shared cinematic universe known as Dark Universe. This universe was intended to debut Johnny Depp’s portrayal of the Invisible Man and Javier Bardem’s interpretation of Frankenstein’s monster. Unfortunately, the financial loss from The Mummy stalled these plans, leaving us eager fans in anticipation limbo.
According to Fraser, the most crucial element across all our produced movies was simply the enjoyment factor. It was enjoyable, almost like a rollercoaster ride that you wanted to experience repeatedly.
He further explained that the key is to fulfill everyone’s deepest desires. Deviating from this approach would result in something entirely different. In other words, if something has proven successful once, repeat it and so on.
Universal’s theme park division, named Universal Destinations & Experiences, has brought back the Dark Universe branding as a themed area within Universal Epic Universe in Florida. Additionally, The Revenge of the Mummy: The Ride, a real thrill ride, made its debut at both Universal Studios locations in California and Florida back in 2004.
