The newest season of Bridgerton focuses on a different member of the Bridgerton family, and delivers the show’s signature lavishness – beautiful balls, scandalous secrets, and plenty of compelling drama. This is what makes the show so captivating: even seemingly small moments contribute to larger character storylines. However, a closer look reveals some flaws. While the Netflix series isn’t a strict adaptation of Julia Quinn’s novels, some of the changes made to the story are questionable, and Season 4 is a clear example of this.
The first part of the new episodes laid the groundwork for the central romance between Benedict and Sophie, setting up their story for deeper development. We also saw more focus on other characters and their journeys, including Francesca, John, Michaela, and the Bridgerton siblings Hyacinth and Gregory, as well as Eloise. The series also hinted at a dedicated storyline for the Bridgerton matriarch, who has always been the family’s quiet strength—but ultimately, that storyline didn’t fully materialize.
Violet’s Romance in Bridgerton Gets Cut Off for No Reason
Season 4, Volume 1 revisits the blossoming romance between Violet Bridgerton and Lord Marcus Anderson, which began gently in the previous season. Their storyline is beautifully paced and mature – especially given their age – and offers a welcome respite from the season’s heavier drama. Violet’s journey is particularly meaningful, as she finds a partner who truly understands and accepts her, years after losing her husband. It’s hopeful to see her potentially forging her own path and stepping outside of the concerns of her children and the constraints of widowhood. Unfortunately, this promising development is ultimately cut short.
The second volume shifts focus away from Violet’s romance to prioritize her children’s lives. Even after accepting Marcus’ proposal, Violet remains unsure and ultimately breaks things off. This feels like a misstep in the story, as it’s clear the series primarily needs Violet to support her children’s relationships. It suggests the show believes Violet can’t find her own happiness without putting her kids’ needs first.
The problem isn’t that she shouldn’t be involved in her children’s lives, social events, or family matters. It’s that the show relies on making her the center of all the drama, and then prevents her from finding her own happiness – it’s a predictable and uninspired plotline. Bridgerton could have shown a woman embracing a new chapter and finding love again, but instead, it defaults to a familiar, limiting role: the selfless mother and advisor who prioritizes everyone else’s needs over her own.
It’s common for shows to underdevelop characters outside of the main younger cast, and this series falls into that trap. Violet had the potential to be a standout character, demonstrating that love and personal growth are possible at any age, but her storyline is unfortunately rushed and left unresolved. The arc between Marcus and Violet feels incomplete and disappointing, starting strong but ultimately serving only to force a dramatic conclusion that doesn’t really add anything to the story. Furthermore, Marcus remains a fairly one-dimensional character, existing mostly to support others. It leaves you wondering if these characters will ever get the development they deserve.
Was Violet and Marcus’ Romance Always Meant to End This Way?
After Season 4 was released, the show’s creator, Jess Brownell, discussed the fate of the couple in interviews. She explained that their eventual breakup was planned from the beginning. She told People magazine that Violet, recently widowed, needed time for personal growth, and Marcus served as the catalyst for that journey. While acknowledging the strong chemistry between the characters, Brownell felt it was too early for Violet to commit to marriage again.
In Season 3, Gemmell shared that she viewed Violet’s relationship with Marcus as Violet figuring out who she was. More recently, Francis explained the connection thrived because of Violet’s open heart and genuine way of loving. This is precisely why fans began supporting their relationship even before it became clear something romantic was developing.
When considering Violet’s growth as a character, her later decisions feel confusing. She’s a mature woman, a mother, and clearly understands love and making decisions, so why does she seem lost when it comes to her own happiness? While fear – specifically, the social disapproval of a widow remarrying – could be an explanation, it clashes with her advice to Benedict about pursuing Sophie. It’s inconsistent with the wisdom she shows elsewhere.
Most TV shows follow a pattern where the central couple ends up together. With Violet and Marcus, viewers became particularly invested because their storyline was original to the show, not taken from the books, which made it exciting. It’s disappointing that Bridgerton seemed poised to develop this new path for Violet, only to abandon it with the explanation that she needs more time to discover what she wants – even if she ultimately decides she doesn’t want a relationship.
Ultimately, if the character doesn’t find happiness, the entire story feels meaningless and like a waste of time. It’s disappointing to see a potentially great character and plotline fall flat and become frustrating. Now, it remains to be seen whether Violet will actually develop and change as a result of everything that’s happened, as that was the initial expectation.
