Despite being Netflix’s biggest movie hit ever, fans will have to wait a while for a sequel to KPop Demon Hunters. Currently planned for a 2029 release at the earliest, speculation is already building about what adventures Rumi, Mira, and Zoey will have next. Producer Michelle Wong recently shared some hints about the future of the idol trio and which characters might take center stage in the upcoming movie during an interview at the Producers Guild Awards.
I was talking to Wong at the PGA and asked about what the team might focus on in the next KPop Demon Hunters game. She was happy to share a little about what she’s hoping for! She mentioned she’d really like to delve into the backstories of Mira and Zoey, and even explore where they come from. She’s also very interested in expanding on Derpy’s story, and showing more of the relationship between Derpy and Sussie. While we got to know Zoey and Mira pretty well in the first game, Rumi was really the central character dealing with her surprising family history. And even though Derpy showed up a few times, there’s still a lot we don’t know about that blue demon tiger!
Huntrix’s Return
Wong isn’t the only person involved with KPop Demon Hunters who’s suggested more content is on the way. Earlier this year, the film’s writer and director, Maggie Chang, alluded to future projects, saying that while she couldn’t confirm anything officially, another installment wouldn’t be a surprise given the popularity of sequels. She explained that animation takes a significant amount of time, but she’s eager to start working on a new movie and share it with fans, adding that she believes many people are hoping for a continuation of the story.
The original film didn’t explore Mira and Zoey’s pasts much, but a quick glimpse during the song “Golden” suggested Mira had a strained relationship with her family due to her lively nature, and Zoey was unsure about her path in life. Derpy’s history remains the most unknown, as very little is revealed about how she was raised.
I am absolutely buzzing about everything happening with KPop Demon Hunters! Not only is it Netflix’s biggest movie ever, but Huntrix is seriously going for Oscar glory this year! Can you believe they’re planning to have the voice actors who play the idol group perform their hit song, “Golden,” live at the 98th Academy Awards on March 15th? It’s amazing because the movie is nominated for two awards – Best Original Song and Best Animated Feature! The competition is fierce, of course, but I, along with so many fans, am really hoping Rumi, Mira, and Zoey will win at least one Oscar – they deserve it!
