*Contains spoilers for Bridgerton season 4.*
Netflix has announced that season 5 of Bridgerton will take a different path than the original novels, centering on a popular couple chosen by fans. Filming has already begun.
The fifth book in the Bridgerton series sees Eloise finally finding romance. However, the fifth season of the TV show will instead focus on the love story between Francesca and Michaela Stirling.
In the third season of the hit show, Francesca, portrayed by Hannah Dodd, tied the knot with John Kilmartin and moved with him to his family’s estate in Scotland for the summer. John’s cousin, Michaela, played by Masali Baduza, also joined them.
Okay, so in the newest season, we see the couple back in London, and they’re really struggling to start a family. It’s heartbreaking, because just six episodes in, John unexpectedly passes away – it looks like he had an aneurysm, though they don’t say it directly. It was a total shock, honestly.
The fifth season picks up two years after John’s passing, focusing on Francesca as she deals with her grief and begins dating again. Things become more difficult when Michaela returns to London, stirring up complicated emotions.
I just saw the first trailer for the new season, and honestly, my heart skipped a beat! It opens with Francesca and Michaela standing in the doorway of Kilmartin House, with this gorgeous Scottish scenery stretching out behind them. And the best part? Their hands are reaching for each other – it’s such a tender moment and leaves you wanting more!

Season five of Bridgerton will focus on Francesca Bridgerton (played by Hannah Dodd), the quiet middle sister. Two years after the death of her husband, John, she cautiously begins looking for a new spouse, motivated by sensible considerations.
When John’s cousin Michaela comes back to London to manage the family estate, Fran finds herself torn between what she thinks she should do and what she truly wants, forcing her to re-evaluate her plans and consider following her heart.
Francesca, the Countess of Kilmartin, has always been a private and reserved person, feeling like she doesn’t quite fit in. But when she meets Michaela, new emotions awaken within her, leading her on a journey of self-discovery that could completely transform her life.
Michaela seems confident and outgoing, but she’s actually quite sensitive and tends to avoid difficult situations. This season, she’ll be challenged to confront her insecurities as she deals with her cousin’s memory and her complicated feelings for Francesca.

Julia Quinn’s fifth Bridgerton novel, To Sir Phillip, With Love, tells the story of Eloise, who considers herself a confirmed spinster, and her journey to finding love with Sir Phillip Crane.
This isn’t the first time the Netflix series has changed the order of events from the books. For example, Colin and Penelope’s love story was featured in season 3 of the show, but it actually happens in the fourth book of the original series.
Currently, filming for the fifth season is happening in London. The season is being produced by Shona Rhimes and led by showrunner Jess Brownell.
All four seasons of Bridgerton are currently streaming on Netflix. If you’d like to read the books, you can purchase the Bridgerton series on Amazon.
