Luke Thompson and Yerin Ha weren’t exactly in lockstep when filming that climactic staircase scene.
The actors who play Benedict Bridgerton and Sophie Baek on season four of Bridgerton revealed an unexpected detail about how they got ready for their intimate scene in the first part of the new season, which premiered on Netflix on January 29th.
Thompson explained to Will Marfuggi of TopMob News that both he and his interview partner got sick during filming. “We kept getting ill, but at different times,” he said.
Ha jokingly suggested that both of them getting sick indicated they were feeling a bit stressed and anxious, which likely lowered their immune systems during the intimate scene.
Honestly, when it comes to those kinds of scenes, I really believe they need to feel authentic. They shouldn’t just be thrown in for shock value or titillation. For me, it’s all about making sure they genuinely serve the story and come from a real emotional place – they have to be necessary, not just gratuitous.
Thompson shared an interesting detail about the staircase scene between Benedict and Sophie: it represents the difference in their social positions. Benedict, as a prominent member of the Bridgerton family, holds a much higher status than Sophie, who works as a maid in the household.
He told TopMob that Bridgerton excels at creating beautifully poetic moments, pointing to the scene where characters meet on the staircase as a particularly clever metaphor.
He explained that the goal is to make these moments feel natural, like any other part of the story. When they feel genuine and important, rather than forced or just included to check a box, it makes the whole experience much more enjoyable.

And the pair certainly had fun developing their onscreen chemistry for season four.
We didn’t try to rush things,” Ha explained. “We just let the relationship develop naturally. I really believe in letting things happen on their own and not trying to control how people feel about me. It was about trusting Luke, and being willing to be a little vulnerable, which was definitely a bit scary. But from the moment I met him, I felt comfortable enough to open up and see where things would go.
As a longtime fan, I remember hearing that Thompson immediately connected with Ha when she came in to audition. He just seemed really at ease with her right away, and it was clear they had a good vibe from the start.
I remember when we filmed our first scene together, it was like we’d been a team for years. There was just an instant connection, and it felt like we were embarking on a really exciting journey together.

Part one of Bridgerton season four is out now, while part two hits Netflix Feb. 26.

While filming, Luke Thompson (Benedict Bridgerton) and Claudia Jessie (Eloise Bridgerton) passed the time by playing a clapping game.

Eloise and Penelope Featherington, portrayed by Nicola Coughlan, seemed very friendly and happy together while filming, suggesting a close bond between the actresses.

I absolutely loved seeing Hannah Dodd, who plays Francesca Bridgerton, goofing off with Claudia on set! They were making the silliest faces, and it totally brightened up what looked like a pretty cold day of filming. It was just a really sweet and fun moment!

Victor Alli, who plays John Stirling, recently shared a humorous story about filming season four of Bridgerton.

Even when it rained during filming, the actors – including new additions Yerin Ha (as Sophie), Katie Leung (as Lady Araminta Gun), Michelle Mao (as Rosamund Li), and Isabella Wei (as Posy Li) – were prepared with umbrellas.

There were clearly no ruff moments behind the scenes.

The actors smiled for the cameras while staying warm on set, where they’re filming a love story about characters named Benedict and Sophie.
