Okay, let’s talk about the Season 2 premiere of *Brilliant Minds*, titled “The Phantom Hook.” I just finished watching it, and if you’re planning to dive in, be warned – spoilers are coming! You can find it streaming now if you have a Peacock subscription, and it’s available the day after it airs.
The TV show *Brilliant Minds* returns in Fall 2025, and the second season starts with a difficult time for Dr. Oliver Wolf, played by Zachary Quinto. The premiere shows him dealing with his father’s reappearance and even getting punched by a boxer with a strange medical condition. We also see a glimpse of the future, six months later, where Wolf is involuntarily staying at Hudson Oaks Behavioral Health Services. Series creator Michael Grassi discussed this future scene, and the music used in it, with TopMob.
The reason Wolf ends up in a psychiatric facility isn’t immediately obvious in the season 2 premiere. The episode starts with him trying to escape, and he nearly succeeds, suggesting he’s still incredibly sharp six months from now. However, it’s clear something terrible has happened, and he was subdued with sedatives before he could fully escape from Hudson Oaks.
The first and last scenes of the premiere featured glimpses into the future, both set to the song “Everyday” by Buddy Holly. Before the show *Brilliant Minds* returned for its second season, the showrunner told me the writers decided to begin the season with a time jump, and explained their reasoning.
Last season, we really focused on Wolf’s history – his parents and how their influence shaped him into the doctor he is. This season, we’re digging deeper into that, but in a really different way. We find Wolf six months in the future, stuck in a psychiatric facility, and he’s clearly struggling. The whole season is going to be about figuring out how he got there. Each episode, we’ll be asking ourselves what finally pushed him over the edge – what was the breaking point that led him to end up in that facility?
The first episode hinted at how future events will connect to the cases Wolf is investigating this season. We saw the neurologist unexpectedly punch someone, which led viewers to wonder how he learned to fight – apparently, an MMA fighter gave him lessons.

Thankfully, Michael Grassi assured fans that *Brilliant Minds* won’t spend the entire season hinting at the future without actually revealing what happens. He then continued to explain:
The story will unfold with unexpected developments and several surprises. Season 2 will begin six months later, revealing the reason Wolf is at Hudson Oaks.
If *Brilliant Minds* continues at its current pace, the show’s current story should reach the point shown in the Hudson Oaks flash forward by the end of March 2026. It makes me question whether NBC’s broadcast of the 2026 Winter Olympics will delay getting answers, since the network typically pauses new episodes of its shows during the Olympic games.
Aside from the serious issues with Wolf’s sedation and possible delays due to the Olympics, the use of Buddy Holly’s upbeat song “Everyday” in the flash forward created a striking contrast with Wolf’s desperate attempts to escape Hudson Oaks.
The song played a prominent role in Season 2 of the Prime Video series *Good Omens*, but its use was quite different than you might expect. Michael Grassi shared why they chose “Everyday” for the scenes showing what happens six months later:
I really love that song! We were looking for something upbeat, though I can’t remember exactly what I had in mind. Luckily, our music supervisor, Season Kent, is fantastic. She’s a legend, and I always enjoy working with her. She actually sent us this song – it was perfect! It fit the scene beautifully and really highlighted what Wolf was experiencing and where we were first meeting him. Seriously, huge credit to Season Kent for finding such a great track.
Don’t miss new episodes of *Brilliant Minds* on NBC Mondays at 10 p.m. Eastern, right after *The Voice*. Or, if you prefer, you can stream the latest episodes on Peacock the next day. You can also find the entire first season available on Peacock now.
