Bruce Springsteen and Patti Scialfa’s love story is a recipe for success.
Actually, Jeremy Allen White shared that he studied the famous musician’s childhood in New Jersey and his long, 34-year relationship with the E Street Band to prepare for playing Bruce in the documentary Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere.
I recall visiting his childhood home in Freehold before filming began, and getting a glimpse of his life with Patti,” The Bear star shared with TopMob News’ Nikaline McCarley on September 28th at the premiere of the 63nd New York Film Festival’s Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere. “It was clear he had created the life he always desired.”
He went on to say, “I understood that’s the central theme of the film – it’s about Bruce’s choices leading him to his current situation, the one we’re witnessing now.”
Oh my gosh, playing The Boss was *intense*! Can you believe he shares kids – Evan, who’s 35, Jessica, 33, and Samuel, 31 – with Patti, his wife of 34 years? And the *craziest* part? White, the actor, had *no* musical background at all! It was such a challenge for him to even *begin* to understand the man’s life!
Honestly, I was a mix of thrilled and totally anxious! As someone who’s followed Bruce’s work for years, this was a big moment for me,” I shared. “The funny thing is, I’d never sung a note or even touched a guitar before, and all that was just swirling around in my thoughts. It was a little overwhelming, if I’m being honest!”
As the Shameless alum confessed, “At first, I worried about what everyone would think and really wanted to make them happy. Taking on the role definitely came with a lot of pressure.”
For White, portraying a rock star like the frontman of the E Street Band in the film-which details the creation of his 1982 album Nebraska-presented a greater challenge than his role as a chef on The Bear, a performance that earned him two Emmy Awards.
I only got to perform for about half, a quarter, or even an eighth of the time that Bruce was on stage in this film,” he explained. “It was relentless, completely draining, and the singing itself was very tiring. When I was recording ‘Born in the U.S.A.,’ I actually got a headache and had to rest. It was really difficult.
