When a reboot of Buffy the Vampire Slayer was announced for Hulu, Sarah Michelle Gellar shared that she would reprise her role as Buffy Summers, sparking hope among fans that other original cast members might also return. While the new series will focus on a new Slayer, Nova, played by Ryan Kiera Armstrong, Gellar suggested that many familiar faces could appear. The only original star who has ruled out a return is David Boreanaz, who played Angel and felt he was too old to reprise the role.
James Marsters, who famously played Spike in the original series, was thrilled about the possibility of returning to the role. He revealed on Streamily (through Instagram) that he’d been told Spike would be coming back and had even been preparing physically for it – doing thousands of sit-ups! Unfortunately, it seems this planned return isn’t going to happen.
What is Next for Buffy the Vampire Slayer?

David Boreanaz felt he was too old to reprise his role as Angel, but James Marsters believed he could still convincingly play Spike and was actively getting in shape to do so. Despite being 63, Marsters had aged well and was prepared to return as Spike until Hulu cancelled plans for a Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale reboot. Now, the chances of that happening are very low.
Sarah Michelle Gellar repeatedly stated she wasn’t interested in reprising her role in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. It took the involvement of acclaimed director Chloé Zhao (Nomadland) to convince her to participate in a new version of the show. However, even with Gellar and Zhao on board, Hulu decided not to move forward with the pilot episode. Despite Hulu’s potential future interest, it appears Gellar is unlikely to revisit the series.
Without Sarah Michelle Gellar’s involvement, it’s unlikely the rest of the original cast, like James Marsters, would agree to revive the show. The premature cancellation of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale pilot also impacted the Firefly cast, who expressed interest in an animated continuation to rally fan support and potentially avoid a similar outcome. Currently, it appears the Buffy franchise will remain inactive, particularly for television.
