Buffy’s Cancelled Reboot Can Now Give Us Something Better

Fans of Buffy the Vampire Slayer were disappointed to learn, via Sarah Michelle Gellar’s Instagram, that Hulu has cancelled the planned revival series. While the news is upsetting for those hoping to see Buffy return, there’s a silver lining. The reboot, titled New Sunnydale, would have continued the original story, but with Buffy as a mentor guiding a new Slayer and helping her forge her own path.

Although the planned revival of Buffy the Vampire Slayer isn’t happening at the moment, a different, potentially better project could emerge. However, that hinges on whether Sarah Michelle Gellar is open to revisiting the series after this unsuccessful attempt.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer Revival Cancelation Isn’t The End

Sarah Michelle Gellar appeared disappointed when she shared the news that the planned Buffy the Vampire Slayer revival was no longer happening. However, she suggested she’s open to revisiting the series in the future, perhaps with a different concept. The original plan, which had been in development at Hulu for a year, would have brought Gellar back as Buffy Summers, mentoring a new Slayer named Nova, played by Ryan Kiera Armstrong of The Lowdown.

Besides Sarah Michelle Gellar, no other original cast members were set to return, though Gellar suggested anything was still possible. The pilot episode was directed by Chloé Zhao, and it was her involvement that finally persuaded Gellar to agree to the revival after previously declining. Zhao is a highly acclaimed director, known for winning an Oscar for Nomadland and receiving another nomination for her 2025 film, Hamnet. Despite Zhao’s talent and Gellar’s return as Buffy, Hulu ultimately decided not to move forward with Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale after viewing the pilot.

Sarah Michelle Gellar shared that it was actress Kaitlyn Zhao who reignited her passion for the character Buffy Summers, ultimately leading her to consider returning to the role. Zhao wasn’t shocked by Hulu’s decision to cancel the planned Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale reboot. Gellar even playfully suggested she’s still available if the world ends! However, with the revival now off the table, the question remains whether she’d reprise the role again. A Hulu insider indicated they might explore other versions of Buffy the Vampire Slayer in the future, but this particular take wasn’t the right fit.

What Could Be Next For Buffyverse Shows?

As a huge Buffy fan, I have to admit it feels unlikely Sarah Michelle Gellar would revisit the role again. She turned down a revival series several times, and it took Chloé Zhao really persuading her to even consider it. Now that Hulu canceled the show after just one pilot, I’m wondering if anyone could convince her to try again. Honestly, Buffy just wouldn’t be the same without her, and another series feels kind of pointless. But if she did come back, maybe, just maybe, they could create something even better than the original Buffy the Vampire Slayer. It’s a long shot, but I’m still hoping!

The idea of Buffy returning was thrilling, but the planned story for Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale suggested the show would focus more on Ryan Kiera Armstrong as the new Slayer, with Buffy playing a supporting role. The final season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer proved that the potential Slayers weren’t as captivating as Buffy and her friends, and that could have been a problem for the Hulu series – viewers might have wanted to see more of the original Slayer instead of a new one.

If a filmmaker can persuade Sarah Michelle Gellar to return, bringing Buffy Summers back as the central Slayer could be the best approach for a revival. While introducing a new generation of Slayers had potential, a short revival—maybe one or two seasons—focused on the original Buffy could satisfy longtime fans. It would also be exciting to see familiar faces like Eliza Dushku (as Faith), Alison Hannigan, and Anthony Stewart Head join the cast, creating a revival series that immediately appeals to those who loved the original show.
