The critically acclaimed sci-fi thriller starring Emma Stone, directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, is now available to stream. Many critics have called it one of the year’s best films, and its suspenseful plot makes it a perfect watch during the holidays.
The new film Bugonia will be available to stream on Peacock starting December 26th. The movie stars Stone as a CEO who is kidnapped by two young men convinced she’s an alien trying to destroy the planet. It’s a fresh take on the 2003 Korean film Save the Green Planet! and has been highly praised by critics. Currently, Bugonia has a 97% ‘Certified Fresh’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and audiences give it an 84% score. MovieWeb’s Britt Hayes called it a “dark, discomforting satire” that reflects the current political climate.
Bugonia released in theaters on October 31, 2025. The film stars Stone, Jesse Plemons, Aidan Delbis, Stavros Halkias, and Alicia Silverstone. Lanthimos (The Favourite, Poor Things) directed Bugonia based on a screenplay by Will Tracy (The Menu). The latest collaboration between Stone and Lanthimos is predicted to get some love during the awards season, with both potentially nabbing major nominations in their respective categories. Driven by wild conspiracy theories, two young men abduct the CEO of a large corporation, believing she’s an alien planning to wipe out humanity.
‘Bugonia’ Writer Talks Truth & Paranoia in Today’s World
Will Tracy, the writer of Bugonia, recently told MovieWeb how his surroundings influenced the screenplay for the suspenseful thriller. He shared that he wrote the film during the COVID-19 pandemic, and the resulting feelings of paranoia and isolation naturally fit with the story’s themes.
I made this film right in the middle of the COVID pandemic, and honestly, it still feels like we’re dealing with the fallout from that time. I really wanted to capture that feeling of being cut off from everyone, constantly on edge, and just… lost. It was so hard to know what was really happening, which news to trust, or even if there was a real truth. Nothing felt solid or like it was moving us forward, either as individuals or as a society. It’s that uncertainty I tried to explore.
Without giving away any key plot points, Bugonia delves into some very difficult themes, exploring the sad backstory of Teddy (Jesse Plemons) and culminating in a stark and uncompromising ending. Tracy, discussing Teddy’s choices, felt that, at its core, the film is about everyone trying to protect something they value.
It’s hard to cope with all the problems in the world. You could ignore them and focus on personal gain, or try to distract yourself. But some people feel compelled to take action. That’s what drives all the characters in this film – they’re all trying to protect something important to them.
