Sony’s latest financial report for 2025 shows a significant loss related to its investment in Bungie, which has noticeably lowered PlayStation’s profits.
Simply put, Sony wrote down the value of its Marathon studio by $765 million last year, which impacted their overall profit.
Even after accounting for a loss in value, Sony’s gaming division still saw a 12% increase in profits compared to last year. Without that loss, profits would have actually jumped by 45%.
Sony bought Bungie for around $3.6 billion in 2022, hoping the company would lead their efforts in creating ongoing, live service games. However, the deal hasn’t gone as smoothly as planned and seems to have caused more problems than benefits.
Bungie’s new game, Marathon, faced a difficult and expensive development process. Reports indicate costs exceeded $200 million, and the game experienced delays and controversies surrounding its artwork.
The game is well-received by both players and critics, being a solid extraction shooter. However, it doesn’t seem to be a massive commercial success. While people who play it enjoy it, sales numbers, based on data from SteamDB, appear to be relatively low.
Despite the challenges, Bungie is still dedicated to the game and has repeatedly promised players that they have big plans for the future.
Overall, this situation isn’t ideal for Bungie. They might need to make more cuts, like layoffs, or find other ways to reduce spending in order to improve the company’s performance.
