There is no going back for Billy Butcher in The Boys.
Karl Urban, speaking with ScreenRant about the upcoming fifth season of The Boys, revealed he was excited to explore new aspects of his character, Butcher. He explained that after Butcher absorbed the powered symbiote at the end of season four, he felt like he was finally able to delve into previously unexplored territory with the character. Urban confirmed he actively contributed ideas to shape Butcher’s arc in this new direction.
Urban explained that preparing for season five required him to deeply understand the current state of his character, Butcher. He described Butcher as having a dual personality, almost like two distinct people. When Butcher activated his power, Urban portrayed him as robotic and emotionless, similar to the Terminator – a cold, merciless killer, a true monster.
He explained that while Butcher has changed, the unpredictable and enjoyable side of his personality from earlier seasons remains. Karl Urban sees his character in the fifth season of The Boys as still being the strong leader who keeps the team focused, but also as someone desperately trying to maintain his remaining human qualities. He found it interesting to explore these different facets of Butcher as the show comes to an end.
How Will Billy Butcher’s Story End In The Boys Season 5?
Wow, that ending to The Boys season 4 really left me thinking about Butcher. It’s clear his time is running out, with that Temp V taking such a toll on him. After seeing him throw caution to the wind last season, I honestly believe his arc is going to end with him sacrificing everything to finally take down Homelander. And honestly, with that parasite eating away at him, it wouldn’t surprise me at all if he’s responsible for some of the big deaths we’re expecting in the final season. It just feels like everything is pointing in that direction.
The first two episodes of The Boys season 5 will be available on Prime Video starting Thursday, April 8th. New episodes will be released weekly, with the season finale arriving on May 20th.
