Caitlyn Jenner has lost a longtime friend.
William Hasley, the ghostwriter for Olympian Michael Johnson’s 1996 book, Finding the Champion Within, passed away on June 6th at the age of 78, according to Los Angeles County Medical Examiner records obtained by TopMob News.
According to the L.A. Fire Department and the New York Post, Hasley was discovered near Runyon Canyon. Rescue teams tried to save him by air, but their efforts weren’t successful.

Hasley was pronounced dead at the scene. No cause of death has been shared at this time.
Hasley wasn’t just a writer; he also wrote screenplays for popular cartoons like The Smurfs and Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids. His work on Fat Albert led to his involvement with the Special Olympics, something he was passionate about. As his website biography notes, he was a former football and cross-country athlete at Marshall University.
In 1984, he contributed to NBC’s Star Salute to the U.S. Olympic Team, where he first met Bruce Jenner. According to his biography, they quickly became friends, and Jenner later asked him to write a motivational book, Finding the Champion Within, about his approach to winning, which was published by Simon & Schuster.
The book was published in 1996 and offered readers a 10-step program to reboot their lives.
Hasley went on to write books for others, including Passion, Profit & Power for Marshall Sylver and The Slight Edge for Jeff Olson.
In addition to his book writing, he penned episodes for the television series The Young Riders and Swift Justice in the 1990s. He also created several unaired pilot episodes, including Borderline Heroes, which ABC purchased, and Brooklyn District for Universal.
According to his website, Hasley worked as a writer on the film Defiance with Gerald Green and Oliver Stone. He also taught writing at UCLA.
Hasley was previously married to Bold and the Beautiful actress Robin Riker.
