Helen George, star of Call the Midwife, recently spoke with TopMob about the upcoming Christmas special, including what fans can expect from Trixie and Matthew’s storyline. She also shared her enthusiasm for the holidays and her exciting new role as the Fairy Godmother in the Richmond Theatre’s production of Cinderella.
How is Trixie this festive season?
You know, I’ve been really struck by Trixie lately. Despite being miles away from her husband, she actually seems… peaceful. More settled than I’ve ever seen her, and genuinely strong. She’s finally found a place, both in her life and at Nonnatus House, where she truly feels like she belongs. It makes you think, though – how would she cope if everything changed? If Nonnatus House itself was suddenly in danger, would that stability hold up?
Trixie has been through a lot and really needs a calm period in her life. However, it makes you think: as an actress, will she still be able to find compelling roles if she’s genuinely happy and settled?
It’s honestly a relief to see. After dealing with so much hardship and heartbreak for so long, it’s almost satisfying that she’s now focused on other people’s problems instead of her own.
With this being the fourteenth Christmas special of Call the Midwife, the cast and crew must feel like a very close-knit family!
I love the cast and crew like a family. Today is Judy Parfitt’s (Sister Monica Joan) birthday, and we’re all celebrating with her – we’ve decorated her trailer with balloons and flowers! I recently had a Halloween party where I dressed as a banshee and my daughters, aged eight and four, were scary clowns. Hilda, one of the camera crew, came with her family, and Victoria Yeates, who played Sister Winifred, joined us too. It’s wonderful that we’ve all become such close friends over the years.

If you go big on Halloween, I’m assuming that you absolutely love Christmas?
Moving into this house felt like hitting the Christmas jackpot! It was honestly a big reason we chose it – I immediately pictured the tree in the perfect spot. Christmas has always been special to me. Growing up, we’d all gather at my aunt’s – she always had the most amazing house for it – and we’d wear silly Christmas jumpers and have so much fun playing games. I have such wonderful memories, and now I’m so excited to create those same traditions for my own kids here.
So when do things get under way in the George household?
Okay, so when I get around to actually making the Christmas cake, it’s a whole process! I started soaking the fruit way back in November, around Bonfire Night, to get it properly infused with booze. It really needs that time to soak it all in, you know?
What do the holidays mean to you?
Family. And charades. And cheese!
Do you stay traditional with Stilton?
I have all of them. But with my cake, I like to have a slice of wensleydale.
You’re performing in a pantomime this year as the Fairy Godmother in Cinderella, alongside Basil Brush at the Richmond Theatre in London. Are you enjoying it?
I’m performing two shows every day for a month. The schedule is pretty tight – I have a show on Christmas Eve, the day off on Christmas Day, and then back on stage for Boxing Day. We only have a week to rehearse! To make up for missing my kids’ school performances, I’m taking them to Lapland afterwards, since I’ll be busy with my own show.

Call the Midwife seasons 1-14 are available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
