Judy Parfitt, age 90, portrays Sister Monica Joan, the elegant and knowledgeable resident of Nonnatus House who often quotes poetry. She’s dedicated to her faith, enjoys treats, and has a fascination with astrology. Helen George, 41, plays Trixie Aylward, a midwife who appears carefree but is actually quite strong – and who happens to be married to a baronet. These two actresses have been working together on this series since it began in 2012.
Helen, when did you first meet Judy?
I met Helen at the very first table read, and she immediately shone – she truly looked like a star with her bright blue eyes and red curls. Her pale skin was beautifully accented by cashmere and pearls. I was quite nervous when I introduced myself, but she was lovely. I was initially intimidated by her strong personality, but she quickly became a mentor to me. Over the years, she’s become a wonderful friend and someone I can always confide in, both professionally and personally. I cherish our relationship. Watching Judy and Jenny Agutter work has been incredibly educational. They’re so much fun and have a playful side, but they’re also completely dedicated and professional in their craft.
Judy, were you aware you were such an inspiration?
I love playing Monica Joan! It’s been a really enjoyable experience, and honestly, I didn’t realize I was even teaching anyone anything. I went to a convent school, and I always dreamed of playing a nun.
I really look up to Judy. She’s just so effective and naturally gifted at what she does. What I admire most is her directness – she doesn’t put up with nonsense and she’s completely unapologetic about it, which is inspiring to me as a woman. I used to constantly apologize for simply existing, but watching her has made me want to be bolder. I’m trying to channel her energy and just say what needs to be said, without all the unnecessary apologies. She has this incredible charisma that allows her to get away with things, and honestly, I think she’s a true icon.
Do you feel iconic, Judy?
Judy: Well, I haven’t got anything after my name to say that I am!
Would you like something?
I’d love to be addressed as Dame Judy, both for my own sake and for my family. Many actors have asked me why I haven’t been, and I honestly don’t know the reason. I’m not sure if it’s something I haven’t done to earn it, or something I have done that’s holding it back!
How will you celebrate Christmas?
I really enjoy spending Christmas Day alone. My family usually goes away, and I treat myself to a delicious meal – I love to cook, so I always make something special. I also like to watch Call the Midwife. Sister Monica Joan isn’t in every episode, so the Christmas special feels fresh and new. Plus, we film the show so far in advance, usually around April, that I’ve completely forgotten what happens! It’s lovely – it feels like watching it for the first time.
Helen recently moved into a wonderful house just in time for Christmas. She immediately knew the perfect spot for the Christmas tree! Christmas has always been special to her, and she’s excited to create those same happy memories for her children.

This year’s Christmas specials of Call the Midwife will be shown on BBC One and BBC iPlayer at 8:15 PM on Christmas Day and 8:30 PM on Boxing Day.
