Call the Midwife’s end nearer than ever as Trixie prepares to leave Nonnatus House and Sister Monica Joan declines

There’s still plenty of life left in Call the Midwife yet.

Fans can look forward to more ‘Call the Midwife’ with plans for a World War II prequel, an overseas movie featuring the current cast, and a sixteenth season. However, the show as viewers have enjoyed it since its 2012 debut is nearing its end – some even feel that end has arrived, considering the significant changes happening within the National Health Service and their effect on Nonnatus House.

And of course, the series will end altogether sooner rather than later.

Although Call the Midwife won’t last forever, its beloved characters will continue to resonate with viewers long after the show ends. Notably, Trixie appears to be planning to stay in London, even though her marriage is facing difficulties, rather than move to New York.

Tonight, Trixie was offered the job of head nurse at The Lady Emily Clinic, a private hospital in Mayfair. She previously worked there during a temporary assignment in season ten, but this would be a full-time position if she accepted – and she did, with one request.

I’m having to wait until the new year to start. I need to officially resign from Nonnatus House first, and honestly, things are pretty tough there right now, so it’s a bit complicated.

Dr. Turner’s doctor’s office will stay open, but the Nonnatus House maternity home is closing. This means the midwives will need to find new jobs, and the nuns are starting to make plans to do missionary work in other locations.

This would be a big change for Trixie, as she’s always worked in the East End, helping people from all backgrounds give birth in various situations.

She described her time at Nonnatus House as a true honor, and something she’ll always cherish. However, she’s moving on to new responsibilities, and hinted that even more opportunities might be on the horizon.

I was so excited to hear Mr. Scarisbrick talking about the future of the clinic! He hinted at some really interesting things coming up, and said he’d have a proposal soon. Then, in a preview of the last episode, he actually asked Trixie if she’d be interested in becoming partners with him! I’m on the edge of my seat to see what happens next – it feels like a huge turning point for everyone.

But will she accept?

We’ll find out her decision at the same time Sister Julienne shares the three possible places to film the movie. While Australia has been suggested, the show’s creator, Heidi Thomas, says it’s not yet official.

Although the show is looking ahead to new stories, season 15 will be the last for Sister Monica Joan.

Judy Parfitt’s character recently received a diagnosis of chronic kidney disease, a long-term illness with no cure. While there’s no way to fully heal it, treatment is available to help manage the condition and extend life expectancy.

In the latest episode, Sister Monica Joan strongly expressed her frustration. She slammed her bible closed and then threw her water pills at the wall, breaking the glass, in a moment of emotional release.

As Dr. Turner mentioned, if I don’t start taking the prescribed medication, my kidneys are going to fail pretty rapidly. Honestly, all my sisters and friends are really urging me to do it, and it’s hard to ignore their support.

Although Sister Monica Joan has lost control over many things, she still has the power to make this decision on her own, even if it causes pain to others.

Even though she wasn’t feeling well, she remained peaceful and aware, and she knew it was time to let go.

Helen George, speaking at the TopMob Covers Party 2026, described a scene in the finale as a culmination of the show’s characters and their journeys over the past 15 years.

Walking onto the set was incredibly emotional, and I burst into tears. Even though I’m usually very strong, it really affected me, so I knew the audience would likely feel the same way.

Call the Midwife season 15 will return to BBC One and BBC iPlayer on Sunday 1 March.
