The atmospheric action adventure game CALX, previously known as XTAL, is coming to PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store on June 4th. PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch versions will follow in 2026. Publisher Dear Villagers and developer True Colors also announced that a demo is available now on PC.
In a recent announcement, Gabriele Ferreccio, game and narrative designer, explained that the team’s goal with CALX was to create a truly immersive experience on an alien world. They aimed to evoke the same sense of loneliness and wonder found in classic games like Metroid and Hyper Light Drifter. According to Ferreccio, achieving this requires all aspects of the game – its gameplay, visuals, and music – to work together seamlessly. The team hopes players will enjoy their adventure on the planet Syro.
Here is an overview of the game, via its Steam page:
About
CALX is a visually stunning 3D action adventure game set in a science-fiction world. You’ll explore the planet Syro, a place filled with huge landscapes, shimmering crystals, and remnants of an ancient civilization. Discover the mystery of what happened to the Quoths and their world, guided by the environment itself as you uncover its secrets.
The game alternates between calm and intense action, creating a flowing rhythm similar to ocean waves – periods of quiet thought are followed by bursts of fighting, and then back to calm. The art and music are closely connected; the stunning visuals influence the music, and the music, in turn, enhances the artwork.
You’re the only person on the planet Syro, but it doesn’t feel isolating. You’re a tiny part of a huge, enigmatic world, and exploring these lost locations has a peaceful, slightly sad beauty.
Movement Opens the World
You’ll primarily move through the world by jumping, dashing through the air, floating, and using a grappling hook to reach different places. The world is all connected, and new areas become accessible as you unlock new abilities. Don’t forget to go back to places you’ve already been – you might find hidden paths with your new skills!
As you journey through the world, its history unfolds. Ancient ruins hold hidden secrets, and mysteries appear as you look closer. The surroundings themselves tell tales of what happened before.
Contemplative, With Meaningful Combat
Your AI partner, AFX, accompanies you on your journey and becomes more powerful as you advance. Battles combine close-quarters fighting with long-distance attacks. Mastering the timing of your dodges will give you an edge in combat.
As you play, you’ll find upgrades that make your character stronger and more agile in combat. Explore the ruins to discover new weapons, each offering a unique way to battle enemies.
Winning fights depends on skillful movement, not just powerful attacks. Think of battle as a moving puzzle – how you get around is just as important as what weapons you use.
Different Zones, Different Moods
Every part of the game has a unique atmosphere. Some areas are peaceful and serene, while others feel vibrant and mysterious. The game appreciates quiet exploration just as much as fast-paced action.
As a player, I’ve found that the best way to get better in this game is by collecting bits and pieces of old tech. Each upgrade I find actually changes how I can get around and interact with the world, which is super cool! And the best part? I get to choose where I want to go next – there’s no set path, which makes exploring really exciting.
CALX is about 10 to 15 hours long. Reminiscent of classic action adventure games.
