Nordcurrent Labs and Black Tower Basement have revealed that a new version of Defender of the Crown, called Defender of the Crown: The Legend Returns, is coming in 2026. It will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and PC through Steam and GOG.
Here is an overview of the game, via Nordcurrent Labs:
The popular strategy game Defender of the Crown, originally released in 1986, is being re-released with three ways to play: Retro Mode, Classic Mode, and Kingdom Mode. This iconic Amiga game has been updated with improved graphics and gameplay, and features expanded content to bring the story of the Saxon-Norman conflict to a new generation of players.
England is in turmoil after the king’s death and the theft of the crown. In this game, you take on the role of a Saxon lord, battling against Norman rivals to build an army and fight to regain control of the kingdom. This updated version stays true to the original game’s design but features improved systems and a more polished experience.

Players battle for dominance on a detailed world map, claiming territories and forming alliances with famous characters like Robin Hood. The game comes alive with exciting events – from castle sieges and jousting tournaments to daring raids – all brought to life with a striking visual style that combines 2.5D landscapes, beautiful lighting, and detailed pixel art.
The game offers three different ways to play, designed to appeal to all kinds of strategy fans. Retro Mode is a faithful recreation of the original 1986 game, updated for modern systems. Classic Mode updates the gameplay with a new look and feel. And Kingdom Mode is a completely new experience – a roguelike adventure where you use dice rolls and build a deck of cards to navigate unique campaigns.
