Following the positive reception to James Gunn’s Superman film, the next DC Universe movie in development is Supergirl. Fans are eager to know when the first trailer will be released. Milly Alcock introduced her version of Kara Zor-El, also known as Supergirl, in a post-credits scene in Superman, revealing that Krypto the dog actually belongs to her, and Clark Kent was simply pet-sitting for her.
Following the release of the Superman film, DC Studios shared a first look at the Supergirl movie poster, but there hasn’t been much news since. As the winter movie season begins and 2025 nears its end, studios are starting to promote their major films planned for 2026.
There’s been a lot of talk about when Marvel and Sony will release trailers for their big 2025 movies, Spider-Man: Brand New Day and Avengers: Doomsday. We know the Avengers: Doomsday trailer will be shown with the new Avatar: Fire and Ash movie when it comes out next month, but fans are also wondering about trailers for Supergirl.
When The Supergirl Movie Trailer Could Be Released
The first trailer for the upcoming Supergirl movie might arrive as early as next month. Following the strategies of Marvel and Sony, DC Studios and Warner Bros. could be planning to use the busy holiday season to start building excitement for the film’s 2026 release. While Warner Bros. doesn’t currently have any other large movies scheduled for release around that time, that isn’t a deciding factor in their plans.
Looking at how Superman‘s marketing started, the first teaser trailer came out on December 18, 2024. If DC Studios follows a similar plan, we can expect the Supergirl trailer around mid-December, possibly shown before films like Avatar: Fire and Ash in theaters.
There’s a good chance the first trailer for Supergirl won’t appear until early next year, and there are two main reasons why. First, Superman was intended to kick off the new DC Universe, so the studio likely wanted to focus all its marketing efforts on that film. They needed to make sure James Gunn’s Superman was a hit to give the new franchise the best possible start, which is probably why its trailer came out when it did.
Another reason the upcoming Supergirl movie might feel different from Superman is its story. It’s based on the comic Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, which features a more mature and cynical version of Supergirl. Unlike the traditional portrayal, this Supergirl embarks on a quest driven by revenge.
Although the movie should attract many viewers, it’s noticeably more serious and geared towards older audiences than the original Superman film. Because of this, the way it’s advertised might be different. Depending on how mature the content is, DC might avoid showing the trailer before family-friendly movies like Zootopia 2.
With the Supergirl movie set to come out in less than nine months, we can expect to see promotion start soon, possibly within weeks. It would be a good strategy to release the Supergirl trailer next month, but if not, early 2026 is a likely window. A release timed with the Super Bowl on February 8th, 2026, could be a smart move. Ultimately, we’ll just have to wait for more information.
