It’s become a pattern: Netflix cancels shows that seemed promising before they could really shine. They’ve done this with several popular series like Sense8, Marco Polo, and Santa Clarita Diet, and often their adaptations of popular stories don’t quite meet expectations, as seen with The Old Guard 2. This latest cancellation – an animated show with its final season arriving in just four days – may be due to similar issues with animation quality not meeting fan expectations.
Despite having a lot of potential, the Netflix series Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft didn’t quite succeed and was ultimately canceled. While some fans blame the animation style – noting Powerhouse Animation’s previous work ranged from the excellent Castlevania to the more average Blood of Zeus – others believe the show strayed from what makes Lara Croft a compelling character. A Reddit user explained that it wasn’t just the change to her signature dual pistols, but that the show failed to capture her adventurous spirit. The attempt to make her more relatable by focusing on a family drama and guilt-tripping her into following her father’s path took away from the fun and excitement of being a tomb raider, fundamentally changing the character and the premise of the series.
Despite Mixed Reviews, It Had The Potential To Be A Great Show
According to Lyvie Scott at Inverse, the new series fits comfortably within the Tomb Raider franchise, and it’s impressive that it tells a fresh story in such a familiar setting. The Legend of Lara Croft appeals to both longtime fans and newcomers, demonstrating that video game adaptations don’t need to be simple retellings. While critics generally liked the show (scoring 73% on Rotten Tomatoes), general audiences were less enthusiastic (33%). Some negative reviews focused on Lara Croft not being portrayed as overly sexualized, but the most significant criticisms centered on a weak storyline and a Lara Croft character that didn’t quite feel true to her established personality.
Archi Sengupta from Leisure Bite gave the show a 2 out of 5 star rating, describing “Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft” as disappointing, boring, and lacking in sense, with the main character coming across as overly whiny.
As a long-time fan, I really feel like The Legend of Lara Croft had so much promise, but it just didn’t quite live up to it. It’s sad to see Lara’s character feel so lost. I understand characters evolve with the times, but when a show loses what made the character special in the first place, it’s disappointing for those of us who’ve loved her for years. It just didn’t capture the excitement I was hoping for.
