Cancelled Shonen Jump Series’ Creator Bids Farewell With a Promising Message Amid Fan Outcry

I’m a huge fan of manga, and it’s amazing to me how Weekly Shonen Jump became the best-selling manga magazine ever! Titles like Dragon Ball, One Piece, and Naruto really paved the way. What’s even more incredible is how it’s still doing so well after all these years, even though tastes change so quickly. It seems like these days, most series wrap up around 300 chapters – even really popular ones like Demon Slayer and Jujutsu Kaisen. Jump is always introducing new manga, which means some have to end to make space. They usually give a new series about a year – around 40-60 chapters and a couple of collected volumes – to see if it’s a hit before making a final decision.

Shows that don’t perform well, like Astro Royale, are quickly canceled. Sometimes, even promising series are stopped after only a few chapters – before they can reach 19. This happened recently with Kaedegami by Jun Harukawa, which began in WSJ in June and ended on October 19th, 2025, after just 17 chapters, disappointing many readers. Despite the upset, the author, Jun Harukawa, offered an encouraging message in the magazine.

Kaedegami Creator Promises to Return in the Future

Each issue of Weekly Shonen Jump includes a message from the manga artist featured that week, and Viz Media shares these notes in their “Mangaka Musings” section. With the last chapter of Kaedegami, Harukawa wrote, “It felt like a dream! I’ll work hard to contribute again in the future!”

I’m really excited about Kaedegami! It’s a historical series with a supernatural twist, set in a world filled with these creepy monsters called Shenguai. The story centers around Kou, a young orphan who lives with one of these creatures – a Shenguai named Chiyou, who’s got a seriously tragic backstory. Despite being a monster, Chiyou has earned Kou’s complete trust, and he’d do absolutely anything to protect her. The author has done some one-shot stories before, but Kaedegami is their first full serialized manga, and honestly, the initial release didn’t quite live up to expectations.

While not as popular as titles like Kagurabachi and Ichi the Witch, Kaedegami started strong and quickly gained a good readership, boasting beautiful artwork. Unfortunately, the manga was cancelled before a single volume could be released, preventing it from reaching its full potential. This cancellation understandably upset many Shonen Jump readers, but it’s unlikely to be the last time a promising series is cut short by the publisher.

Harukawa’s recent announcement assures fans that he plans to continue creating new manga, even after facing a professional challenge. You can read his work on the official Manga Plus app, and the first collected volume will be available in Japan on November 4th, 2025.
