Carol Danvers, also known as Captain Marvel, is one of Marvel’s strongest heroes, and her story has changed a lot over the years. Since first appearing in 1968, she’s gone from being an Air Force officer to Ms. Marvel, then Binary and Warbird, before becoming Captain Marvel. This April, a new five-issue comic series will explore Carol’s history and how it affects what’s to come. Here’s a sneak peek at the cover for the first issue!
The first issue of Captain Marvel: Dark Past, written by Paul Jenkins and illustrated by Lucas Werneck, will be available in stores on April 1st. The story will explore a troubling part of Carol Danvers’ family history and resurfaced memories from her time as Ms. Marvel. A new variant cover by artist J. Carol’s Past Could Be Key to Her Future
What’s compelling about Captain Marvel: Dark Past is its approach to a supremely powerful character. The story brings Captain Marvel face-to-face with her own history, forcing her to question everything she believes. This not only deepens her character but also highlights a universal vulnerability – everyone is shaped by their past. For Carol Danvers, this could prove to be her most difficult battle yet.
Okay, so the new Captain Marvel comic, Dark Past #1, sounds really interesting! Basically, it’s diving into Carol Danvers’ family history, and it seems like a pretty big secret is about to come out. Apparently, an attack on New York, linked to a group called DNVR, brings up some uncomfortable truths about the Danvers name. It’s going to force Carol to revisit an old investigation she had to abandon when she was a journalist, and lost memories from her time as Ms. Marvel are coming back to haunt her. The story is being written by Paul Jenkins, who I really enjoyed on The Sentry, and illustrated by Lucas Werneck, so I’m definitely checking this one out – it sounds like a deep dive into Carol’s past and a really personal struggle for her.
“True Believers, I’m thrilled to be doing not one but two books back at the House of Ideas,” Jenkins said. “Captain Marvel is such a great character who has also appeared as Ms. Marvel, Warbird, and even Binary. With such a rich and complex past, under the guidance of so many amazing and talented writers, there is a ton of material for me to mine. I hope to bring my brand of characterization and storytelling to this great character, to examine what makes Carol who she is, and perhaps even bring out a new wrinkle or two.”
