At first glance, everything appears normal,” she said, “but a closer look reveals a lot of problems.

With the season of Captivated coming to an end, Elliot’s past is at last uncovered, and the consequences are heartbreaking.

Read on for our breakdown of the final scenes — but be warned: spoilers ahead.

Too Good to Be true ending explained

Elliot’s mother died in a house fire when he was a young boy, the same age as Liam. He always believed his father was responsible, and ultimately, Fielding Sr. was convicted, even though he maintained his innocence.

The shocking conclusion revealed the house was already on fire when Elliot’s father came home, and Elliot had started the fire. However, the father’s own behavior had created a harmful atmosphere that played a part in the tragedy.

Elliot’s mother was trying to leave her abusive, alcoholic husband and begin a new life in Ireland. Sadly, she planned to do so without taking Elliot with her.

It’s not surprising he was heartbroken by the news, like any kid would be. But then, he did something extreme to try and stop her from going.

After the fire, he started seeing psychologist Debra Mallon and eventually began to trust her. However, his feelings quickly became obsessive, and he became abusive when she needed to reschedule a session.

Whenever Debra attempted to find Elliot a foster home, he’d escape and reappear at her house, often late at night.

Worried about her safety, she completely ended their relationship and wouldn’t provide testimony, making things even harder for Elliot.

Elliot hoped Rachel and Liam would give him the stable, loving family he’d always wanted – something he hadn’t achieved with his former wife, Olivia, where he’d struggled with jealousy and anger. At first, it seemed like his plan was succeeding.

However, when Elliot’s assistant, Simone, started investigating and Rachel began to challenge his actions, she realized there was no possibility of a future for the three of them. She then attempted to distance herself from Elliot.

He’d anticipated this and was already acting. He picked up Liam from school secretly, then tricked his mother into coming to a remote cottage he owned, where he now had complete control over both of them.

Rachel desperately tried to reason with Elliot, hoping they could fix their issues and have a future together, and for a brief moment, she calmed him down. However, the situation quickly escalated when she reached for a knife. Elliot reacted by knocking the knife away and then, tragically, began to choke her.

Honestly, I was on the edge of my seat! Just when things looked really bad, Liam showed up and managed to knock the guy out with a tool he grabbed from the garage. They tried to make a run for it, but then – completely out of nowhere – Elliot, who we thought was down for the count, suddenly woke up and started chasing them into the darkness. It was a crazy turn of events!

When a car escape proved impossible, Rachel bravely confronted Elliot directly, grabbing a blowtorch and using it against him to survive.

We didn’t have to witness the aftermath, but it’s clear Elliot has passed away, allowing Rachel and him to finally find peace and move forward with their lives.

But all is not well.

Being held hostage was awful, but during it all, Elliot dropped a huge bomb on me about Rachel. Apparently, when I was a baby, she struggled with her mental health and felt she couldn’t give me the care I needed. It was heartbreaking to learn she’d had to give me up to the care system – it really floored me, honestly.

Rachel was surprised by how quickly she felt better. She was able to regain her health and take her son back home, where he’s lived ever since.

Even though Rachel assured her son she’d always wanted and deeply loved him – directly contradicting what Elliot had claimed – Elliot’s earlier words continued to bother him.

I understand how you’re feeling, Liam – that sense of not being valued. You shouldn’t trust her, but you can trust me, because we’re alike; we both know what it’s like.

Liam suddenly looked directly at the audience, his face serious, and then the screen went black.

Elliot might be gone, but his hand is still felt.
