Holby City hospital is facing a crisis. A serious mistake by Kim and Matty has led to the emergency department being shut down, leaving things drastically changed.
The emergency department received an unexpected safety inspection prompted by an anonymous tip to the Care Quality Commission. The initial inspection didn’t meet standards, and inspector Ceri (played by Gwyneth Strong) scheduled a comprehensive follow-up inspection in 30 days.
Tonight’s episode of the show, now streaming on BBC iPlayer, features Flynn (Olly Rix) puzzled by the lack of inspectors. He’s then surprised to see Ceri arrive just after Dylan (William Beck) and Stevie (Elinor Lawless) finish their shifts.
I was so relieved when Ceri came for her second check – she seemed really happy with all the improvements we’d made! Kim suggested to Matty and me that we work together as a team for the rest of our shift, just to make absolutely sure Ceri left with a great impression. It felt like a smart move to really pull together and show her what we could do.

Dr. Matty and Dr. Kim decide to treat Tara, a patient with a head injury. Matty wanted a colleague to watch while he performed a lumbar puncture to rule out another issue, but he chose Kim instead of Flynn. Kim quickly looked up how to perform the procedure on her phone. However, her vision became blurry, and she accidentally told Matty to insert the needle too high on Tara’s back.
Tara suddenly said she couldn’t feel her legs, which shocked Kim and Matty. They quickly realized Kim had misread the instructions. After checking with Flynn, they confirmed Tara had completely lost sensation in her legs.
While everything is happening, Ceri observes that the patients remain at risk because there’s no senior doctor available in the evenings.
Flynn informed the team that the emergency department will temporarily stop accepting serious trauma cases overnight, pending a review. This change could potentially affect the hospital’s reputation and financial support.
Now that Flynn is likely to step down, what does this mean for the future of Holby City hospital?
