The recent crossover event between seasons 23 of NCIS and season 2 of NCIS: Origins managed to resolve a plotline that began over a decade ago. After a somewhat disappointing season, CBS seems committed to bringing back the high quality that made NCIS so popular, particularly during the 2025-2026 television season. Though NCIS still performs well in the ratings, it has lost some ground over time. However, the show has been consistently strong since returning from its summer break.
The 23rd season of NCIS and the second season of NCIS: Origins will connect in a special crossover event. Mark Harmon will reprise his role as the older Leroy Jethro Gibbs, appearing in the Origins prequel, and several other beloved characters will return. Muse Watson will make a guest appearance as the older Mike Franks in a particularly inventive scene, but Roma Maffia, as Vera Strickland, will have the most significant role among the returning legacy characters. This crossover also provides an opportunity to finally resolve a storyline involving her character that was left unfinished over a decade ago.
Vera’s MCRT Return Finally Lets Her Stay Throughout The Whole Case
Vera first joined the MCRT as a temporary replacement for Ziva. She appeared in season 11, episode 3 of NCIS, titled “Under the Radar,” and was initially meant to complete a short service requirement before retiring. It was later revealed she had worked with Franks, a former partner of Gibbs, connecting her to his past. Although she expected a quiet assignment, Vera ended up partnering with Tony DiNozzo Jr. when Timothy McGee misplaced his credentials and tried to find them on his own.
During a conversation between Vera and McGee in the recent crossover event between NCIS season 23 and NCIS: Origins season 2, a past detail resurfaced. A previous CBS special didn’t mention that Vera had to leave a case early due to a sprained ankle sustained while working with DiNozzo. Now, after 12 years, she’s able to remain with the team throughout the entire investigation, finally seeing the Serenity case – originally handled by her and Franks’ NIS squad thirty years ago – resolved by Alden Parker’s team.

Diany Rodriguez will continue playing Vera in the upcoming seasons of NCIS: Origins. The show doesn’t show much of what happened in Vera’s career after her professional split with Franks, making her future at Camp Pendleton intriguing. A key question is whether her version of the character will ever work with the MCRT team again. Her playful connection with Parker also opens up possibilities for interesting personal storylines down the road.
Vera mentioned she’s finding retirement dull and misses being involved in field work. However, she isn’t planning a full return to active duty. Still, NCIS might be able to utilize her to connect current storylines with the events shown in NCIS: Origins, particularly since Gibbs is in Alaska and doesn’t appear to be returning to Washington D.C. anytime soon.
