CBS has found a familiar face to replace Stephen Colbert.
I can’t believe The Late Show With Stephen Colbert is ending on May 21st! It feels like a huge loss, honestly. But… apparently, the network is replacing it with Comics Unleashed With Byron Allen starting May 22nd. I saw the announcement on April 6th, and I’m still trying to process it all. It just won’t be the same!
Currently airing at 12:35 a.m. after Stephen Colbert, the comedy talk show will be followed by Byron Allen’s game show, Funny You Should Ask, once Colbert finishes his 10 years with CBS.
Though many fans were disappointed to learn CBS will end Late Night in July 2025 after 33 years, Allen is determined to keep making people laugh late into the night by continuing to showcase stand-up comedians on his talk show.
Allen created Comics Unleashed two decades ago to give comedians a place to perform and share their humor. He expressed his gratitude that CBS is airing a two-hour comedy block featuring both Comics Unleashed and Funny You Should Ask, believing that we always need more laughter.
Oh my gosh, you will NOT believe this! After The Late Show ends, Stephen isn’t just disappearing, he’s working on Lord of the Rings! Yes, the Lord of the Rings! Peter Jackson himself announced it – Stephen is actually going to help write the script for a new movie! I’m seriously losing it right now, this is the best news ever! He’s going to be part of Middle-earth! I can’t even breathe!
Colbert, a dedicated fan of the fantasy novels, was clearly thrilled about his new role.
He expressed his excitement, telling Jackson in a video posted on X on March 25th, ‘You know how much the books and your movies mean to me.’

Colbert had long believed that chapters three to six of the original book – sections that weren’t included in the films – could stand alone as a compelling story within the broader narrative, and he wanted to make that the focus of the new movie.
He said it took him several years to work up the nerve to call me about his script. But around two years ago, he finally did, and I responded positively, leading to a conversation.
Even with this exciting new project, Colbert will still miss his daily interactions with late-night television viewers.
He thanked the fans for watching, saying he appreciated sharing the stage with the band and performers each night. He also expressed deep gratitude to the 200 people who worked on the show.
But The Late Show isn’t the only franchise going off the air. Keep reading for more TV cancellations…
