CBS is making a rare move this year by bringing back a popular show for its second season in the same year the first season aired. While another show in this franchise did this once before in 2022, it’s unusual for TV shows to return so quickly. Typically, there’s a significant gap between seasons, which often leaves viewers waiting a long time for more episodes.
Fans have reason to be excited for the upcoming second season of Marshals, the latest spin-off from Yellowstone. Set after the events of Yellowstone, the show follows Kayce Dutton as he works with the U.S. Marshals, bringing his own style of justice and protection to Montana. He and his team – Pete Calvin, Belle Skinner, Andrea Cruz, and Miles Kittle – all grapple with balancing their work with their personal lives and family obligations.
Can Marshals Hold Up to Yellowstone?
Early reviews of the first season of Marshals are overwhelmingly negative. Critics gave it a score of only 42%, while general viewers rated it even lower at 26%. Most agree the show feels like a rehash of other crime dramas set in a rural area. As critic Josh Rosenberg puts it, the show’s storyline is familiar and lacks the artistic quality and deliberate pacing that allows for showcasing the Montana scenery or character development. While fans of Yellowstone might find something to appreciate, Marshals doesn’t seem to offer anything particularly special or memorable.
Viewers aren’t finding much to enjoy in the series. One person commented they wanted to like the show, particularly liking the character Kayce, but felt the rest of the cast resembled a procedural crime drama. Another viewer added that the female characters, while intended to be strong, come across as superficial and unpleasant, a common issue in Taylor Sheridan’s shows. Although Sheridan is only an executive producer on Marshals, his style is clearly present, though the show hasn’t captured the same magic as Yellowstone. There’s hope that the second season, coming this fall, will improve things.
