Celia Imrie says The Celebrity Traitors might bring out her “naughty streak”

Celia, why have you decided to take part in The Celebrity Traitors?

It’s definitely the game everyone is talking about on TV, isn’t it? It’s popular on both sides of the Atlantic – really, all over the world. I just think it’s a really clever idea. I’d be fascinated to meet the creator of this game.

What will you bring to the game?

Being as open-minded as you can is definitely a positive thing. People often see me as friendly, and that might come in handy.

Are you good at reading people, would you say? Can you spot a liar?

Yes, I’m willing, but I need some time to think it over. It won’t be a quick decision. I’d like to take the time to carefully observe their body language before making up my mind.

Do you want to be a Traitor or a Faithful?

Honestly, I wouldn’t mind at all – if Claudia were to just touch my shoulder, I’d be over the moon! But I have to admit, I still think it’s a pretty demanding task. It’s exciting, sure, but definitely not easy.

We chatted with you about your work on The Thursday Murder Club – did all the intrigue and killings help prepare you for this role?

In a way, yes. Generally, as an actor, you’re used to pretending to be someone else, which is helpful. However, it’s also difficult because you don’t have a character to hide behind this time. It feels very exposing. It’s a challenge, but one I’m ready for.

In my autobiography, I described actresses as being like young Victorian ladies seated around a ballroom, waiting to be asked to dance. That’s how it feels – we all have to wait for the right role to come along. I could certainly play a character like Hedda Gabler even practicing in my attic, but there would be no one there to appreciate my performance. If I were Van Gogh, I could paint in the middle of the night without needing an audience. Throughout my career, I’ve really tried to avoid being typecast by choosing roles that are completely different from what I’ve done before. And appearing on The Traitors is certainly the most different thing I’ve ever done.

Speaking of the game — how do you feel about the Missions?

I’m feeling pretty anxious about them. I saw some of the first season, and people were doing flips on one of those big rotating wheels. That would really scare me! I wouldn’t want to ruin the fun for anyone, but I definitely don’t want to try that. I don’t love heights – I used to enjoy amusement park rides when I was younger, but not anymore.

You’ve watched the previous series — do you have a favourite player?

I really rooted for young Harry Clark, the soldier boy [from series two] throughout the show. But then, I was so disappointed by his actions at the end – I thought he was terrible!

Clearly, the game changes people — will we might see a different side to you?

Yes, quite possibly. I have a naughty streak that I find hard to suppress.
