Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc Ending, Explained: What Happens To Reze?

The movie Chainsaw Man: Reze Arc, which premiered in Japan on September 19th, is now available in U.S. theaters starting October 24th, and will be shown for about two weeks. This film is a direct continuation of the Chainsaw Man manga by Tatsuki Fujimoto, picking up where the first season left off. It features a new character who enters the life of the main character, Denji. At over 90 minutes long, it provides a full movie experience and many feel it works better as a film than Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle.

The Reze Arc, covering about 14 chapters of the manga, dramatically changes Denji’s life when Reze enters the picture. It introduces a potential romance and leads to the most intense fight Denji has ever faced. This isn’t just about Denji wanting a girlfriend; it feels like a real, meaningful connection for him, making her eventual fate incredibly impactful, especially as she was trying to return to him. But whether she actually died is a complex question, leaving the possibility of her return open.

Reze’s Fate Is Unfortunate

Throughout the movie, it’s revealed that Reze, who first seems nice to Denji, is actually trying to get his heart. She pretends to be close to him, which leads to a powerful emotional showdown during the final fight. While Reze originally planned to kill Denji, her feelings for him start to change her actions. She likely would have succeeded if she hadn’t developed some empathy for him, something that grew from their similar difficult pasts. She would have been much harsher with anyone else.

The film powerfully shows Reze’s difficult past, revealing she was a victim of cruel experiments by the Soviet Union. These experiments turned her into a Bomb Devil hybrid and gave her the task of stealing Chainsaw Man’s heart. As Reze and Denji become closer, she starts to feel sorry for him, pointing out how unfair it is that he’s missing out on a normal teenage experience like going to school – something she believes every child deserves. The film highlights that Reze never had a normal teenage life either, strengthening their connection and showing how much they have in common. This might explain why she tries to go back to Denji, even though her mission failed and she knows she’ll be hunted by Public Safety.

Things take a dark turn when Makima intercepts Reze on her way to meet Denji. As seen in the finale, Makima quickly overpowers Reze, leaving her no chance to fight back. This raises a crucial question: is Reze actually dead? Because Reze, like Denji, is a Devil Hybrid, there’s a possibility she could be revived, potentially by transforming into her devil form.

This hints that Reze might not be completely gone, even after the events at the end of the movie, especially given how manipulative Makima is. Because Makima can control devils and fiends, she could easily use Reze to her advantage. It’s sad because fans might not get to see Reze and Denji together again – they had a unique connection, and it’s unlikely anyone could fill that void.

Reze Was the Best Potential Romantic Interest for Denji

Watching the movie, it really struck me how Reze genuinely started to care for Denji. I think it was because they both had such difficult childhoods and could really understand each other’s pain. It felt like they could have been a true support system for one another, forming a much deeper connection than Denji has with anyone else. Especially compared to Makima, who clearly just uses people. Plus, the fact that they’re both human-devil hybrids felt like another layer that could have really strengthened their bond.

As a huge fan, I’m still reeling from the movie! It’s so frustrating that Denji never finds out the full story about what Makima did to Reze – it could have been such an amazing love story. Right now, it’s totally up in the air whether they’ll ever get back together. I’m really hoping future installments of Chainsaw Man will show Denji breaking free from Makima’s control, learning the truth, and maybe, just maybe, finally reuniting with Reze. The movie ends on a pretty sad note, but I refuse to give up hope that they’ll find their way back to each other!
