Channing Tatum Reveals How He’s Approaching Gambit In Avengers: Doomsday, And It Eases A Deadpool And Wolverine-Related Concern I Had

Channing Tatum’s long-awaited Gambit film didn’t materialize due to the Disney-20th Century Fox merger, but his wish of portraying Marvel’s Ragin’ Cajun was fulfilled last year when he appeared in Deadpool & Wolverine as Remy LeBeau. In this movie, Gambit joins forces with Deadpool and Wolverine in The Void. Tatum will reprise his role as Gambit in Avengers: Doomsday, which is slated for release next year. For the upcoming Marvel film, Tatum is adopting a fresh approach to Gambit that thankfully addresses a concern I had from Deadpool & Wolverine.

During an interview with Variety, Channing Tatum expressed that even though Gambit is a highly popular aspect of Deadpool and Wolverine, studio executives had difficulties grasping the accent and how audiences would comprehend him in Avengers: Doomsday. To address this issue, as stated by Tatum himself, he chose to soften his character’s accent.

Instead of fully embracing a Cajun-style approach, Joe and Anthony Russo aim to maintain a balance between humor and seriousness without taking it too far like ‘Deadpool.’ They want to preserve the drama and keep the narrative tight. When Gambit sheds his Mardi Gras persona and gets serious, things take on significance.

Deadpool and Wolverine blend humor with action effortlessly, if not more so than superhero action, making it unremarkable that Gambit’s accent was intentionally overemphasized for comedic effect. At one moment in the movie, Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool character jokes about Minions being Gambit’s dialogue coaches. However, an action-packed film like Avengers: Doomsday would likely find Gambit’s excessive accent and occasional unclear dialogues too much of a distraction if presented similarly.

Although “Doomsday” includes some humorous elements, it was important to make Gambit appear a bit more serious, given his mutant abilities and the fact that he can hurl playing cards imbued with kinetic energy. Channing Tatum, during an interview with Variety, was asked about whether joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe now seemed appropriate. Instead of providing a straightforward answer, he commented on this subject as follows:

“Joining the MCU might be fitting at this point in my career, but that’s for others to decide. What I can say is that I’m excited about the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead.

My primary concern was centered around Gambit, who has distinct preferences – he favors female companionship, frequently smokes, and consumes alcohol. Unlike the common saviors-of-the-world, we require a contrasting character like him in our narrative.

In the upcoming movie, “Avengers: Doomsday,” Gambit is expected to transform into a hero who saves the world. This is due to Robert Downey Jr.’s portrayal of Doctor Doom causing chaos not only in “Doomsday” but also in the future’s “Avengers: Secret Wars.” Interestingly, Channing Tatum, though confirmed for “Doomsday,” didn’t appear in the initial X-Men film series. The cast also includes the return of Patrick Stewart as Professor X, Ian McKellen as Magneto, Rebecca Romijn as Mystique, Kelsey Grammer as Beast, Alan Cumming as Nightcrawler, and James Marsden as Cyclops, who were all part of the original X-Men films.
