Channing Tatum Teases “A Whole Different Gambit… and a Whole Lot More” in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’

Channing Tatum has always dreamed of playing Gambit, and he believes we’ve only glimpsed a small part of what the character can be. He says, “You’re gonna get to see a whole different [Gambit] and a whole lot more.”

While publicizing his new movie Roofman, Tatum shared that the Cajun accent he briefly used in Deadpool & Wolverine will be much more prominent in Avengers: Doomsday.

I’m familiar with the Cajun accent. While I don’t have any Cajun family members, it’s a very distinct way of speaking. Making it understandable to a global audience is challenging, because there’s a lot of variation within the Cajun dialect. And it’s difficult for anyone to *write* authentically for a Cajun character, since they aren’t Cajun themselves. So, I focus on getting the necessary dialogue across, and then I work with my dialect coach – who is actually Cajun – to translate it into the correct dialect. It’s a really unusual process. It really is.

In 2024, Jayson Tatum’s accent quickly became a sensation online, inspiring countless memes and going viral. Fans loved his portrayal of Remy LeBeau and were eager to see more, and it appears they’re getting their wish.

The Channing Tatum and Gambit Connection Runs Deep

Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures

Channing Tatum was raised in Pascagoula, Mississippi, and has said, “I actually grew up in the swamp.” While his father is originally from New Orleans, and the family moved several times throughout the South, Tatum always held onto his love for Gambit:

I totally remember being that kid, huddled in the living room, sharing what I loved with my friends – for me, it was the [X-Men] cartoons. We didn’t have any comic book shops nearby, so the cartoon was my gateway. And [Gambit] just instantly became my favorite. I always connected with him because he felt so *human*. He had flaws – he liked women, he smoked, he even drank! He wasn’t your typical shining hero, but he wasn’t a villain either; he had a good heart and, let’s be honest, a ton of swag.

As soon as the X-Men films began coming out, Tatum would often imagine what the character he might play would look like. He eventually began acting, and after a considerable amount of time, that initial vision finally came true:

It’s hard to put into words what it felt like stepping onto the Deadpool & Wolverine set for the first time. I’d been there before and seen Ryan [Reynolds] and Hugh [Jackman] in costume, but it didn’t really *hit* me until I was wearing the suit and actually *in* a scene. It wasn’t until we all walked out that it became real. I’d glance over at them and honestly, I got goose bumps! I just kept thinking, ‘This is actually happening!’ It felt like a dream come true, almost like a ‘make-a-wish’ moment – like Ryan [Reynolds] granted *my* wish, you know?

Audiences will see all Tatum’s Gambit has to offer in Avengers: Doomsday in 2026.
