I’m so glad things are looking up at the movie theaters! It feels like just yesterday we were worried about the future of cinema, especially after a really slow October where nothing seemed to catch on. Remember Roofman with Channing Tatum? It didn’t do very well in theaters, only making around $22.7 million here in the US, and honestly, Paramount was probably hoping for much more. But it’s great that movies have a second chance now with streaming and Blu-rays. It sounds like Roofman is getting that chance, which is fantastic!
According to the streaming data site FlixPatrol, Roofman is now the most popular movie on Paramount+, surpassing the recent hit Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning. Roofman was added to Paramount+ on December 9th and has quickly become a favorite among viewers.
Roofman Is an Overlooked Gem Based on a Wild True Story

I recently watched Roofman, and it’s an unbelievable story! It’s based on the true life of Jeffrey Manchester, an army veteran who turned to robbing McDonald’s to support his family. He became known as ‘Roofman’ because he’d literally climb onto the roofs to get inside. Eventually, he was caught, but he managed to escape and unbelievably spent months hiding inside a Toys “R” Us! While he was hiding, he actually connected with one of the employees, Leigh, and they formed a surprising friendship. It’s a wild ride, and it’s hard to believe it all actually happened.
Channing Tatum is the main reason to watch Roofman, and the film is designed to showcase his talents. It feels like a classic movie star vehicle, playing to his strengths as an actor. While the story deals with serious issues, director Derek Cianfrance (known for The Place Beyond the Pines and Blue Valentine) strikes a surprisingly light and entertaining tone. This allows Tatum to use his natural charisma and comedic timing, and scenes of him wandering a Toys “R” Us at night are genuinely funny. He also proves he can handle more dramatic scenes with grace, making for a beautifully balanced film thanks to the strong collaboration between him and Cianfrance.
Channing Tatum is fantastic in the film, and he’s well-supported by a talented cast. His chemistry with Kirsten Dunst makes their characters’ relationship believable and engaging. LaKeith Stanfield is particularly memorable as Steve, an old army buddy now involved in a shady ID business, and Peter Dinklage shines as Mitch, the manager of the department store where Jeffrey hides. While the movie relies on Tatum’s performance, the entire ensemble cast elevates the film, making it more than just a showcase for one actor. Thanks to these memorable characters, the film is a great addition to the crime genre.
Although Roofman didn’t perform well in theaters, which likely hurt its chances at major awards, it still deserves recognition, especially for the actors’ performances. While it wasn’t expected to win against strong contenders like One Battle After Another, Sinners, and Hamnet, its availability on Paramount+ shows its quality and hopefully will attract a wider audience.
