It’s always sunny for Charlie Day until his new comedy thriller Kill Me takes a dark turn.
In the film Kill Me, Day plays Jimmy, a man who isn’t convinced he attempted suicide. With the uneasy assistance of a 911 operator, he begins a darkly funny, self-made investigation to figure out if someone is trying to kill him, or if he’s simply chasing his own paranoia. The film also stars Allison Williams, Giancarlo Esposito, Aya Cash, and Jessica Harper.
Glenn Day’s new comedy-thriller is receiving rave reviews, earning a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes. This is only the second film in his career to achieve such high praise. Critics are calling Kill Me a sensitive and understanding look at mental health, and many are describing Day’s performance as outstanding. While Day, famous for It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, has consistently received positive reviews throughout his career, this is only the second time one of his films has earned a perfect score.
| Kill Me | 100% |
| The Saint of Second Chances | 100% |
| The LEGO Movie | 96% |
| Summer of 69 | 89% |
| I Want You Back | 87% |
The lowest-rated film starring Day was the 2023 comedy Fool’s Paradise, which received a 22% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The movie features Day as a man recently released from a mental health facility, alongside Ken Jeong. Currently, fans are excited for The Super Mario Bros. Movie, where Day voices Luigi and Chris Pratt plays Mario in a new adventure.
I just got back from SXSW and I have to say, Peter Warren’s Kill Me really caught me off guard – in a good way! Warren, who you might know from films like Ghost Town and Sid Is Dead, clearly has a passion for the genre; he told Deadline that murder mysteries are actually his favorite. What’s really compelling is the character arc of Jimmy, played by Day, and his co-star Esposito shared some insight into that journey, which adds another layer to the film.
Charlie goes through a remarkable transformation. It’s rare to see a character actively working through a problem on his own. Because he’s dealt with difficult issues like depression and suicidal thoughts in the past, he already feels like an outsider. However, this time, he’s the one driving the action, questioning what’s happening and determined to find answers. He’s incredibly dedicated, and it’s a side of him we haven’t seen before – someone truly battling to understand things for himself, believing he can figure it out. It’s a really inspiring change.
The film Kill Me premiered at the SXSW festival on March 12th, but as of now, there’s no news about when it will be available in theaters beyond that initial showing.
