Even after generating renewed excitement following its release, it’s disappointing that many critics and fans find The Old Guard 2 to be a disappointing sequel compared to the highly-praised original from 2020. However, despite negative feedback, the franchise’s main star suggests that the story of The Old Guard may continue as a trilogy.
Theron discussed the prospect of a third installment for The Old Guard, considering the mixed response to the recently unveiled second part. However, the South African actor wasn’t explicit about the possibility, but also didn’t dismiss it completely. Essentially, she stated that they are currently taking some time to assess the situation, and the fans’ reaction will play a crucial role in deciding whether there will be a third movie. In her words, “I’m not trying to be evasive… We are really just going to take a pause. Ideally, fans will enjoy it, and that’s where we stand right now.
What Are the Chances of Getting The Old Guard 3?
2020 saw the release of The Old Guard, a superhero film that bucked the trend by not being associated with Marvel or DC, and it swiftly gained popularity among viewers. The story follows Andromache of Scythia, also known as Andy (played by Theron), and her centuries-old immortal mercenary team on their quest for vengeance. This film was a massive success on Netflix, reaching the top spot on their charts and receiving an impressive 80% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. It also received several nominations for Saturn Awards and People’s Choice Awards, fueling excitement for its sequel.

The second installment of “The Old Guard,” titled “The Old Guard 2,” was filmed in the year 2022, with plans for a release the following year. However, it faced complications during post-production due to internal changes at Netflix. The sequel features Charlize Theron reprising her role alongside KiKi Layne, Matthias Schoenaerts, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Veronica Ngo, and the introduction of Uma Thurman from “Kill Bill.” Unfortunately, it has not been favorably received by both critics and fans, falling short in comparison to the intricacy and narrative elements of its predecessor. Currently, on Rotten Tomatoes, “The Old Guard 2” holds a 25% rating among critics and a 42% score from the audience.
Spiteful reviews notwithstanding, the sequel has seen impressive streaming numbers shortly after its debut. These strong initial performances, combined with audience interest, may suggest that a third installment could be in the works.
Under the guidance of director Victoria Mahoney, The Old Guard 2 follows Andy and her team as they strive to protect mankind. However, their task becomes more challenging when an ancient immortal resurfaces, adding a new layer of complexity to their mission. The film additionally showcases the presence of Henry Golding and Luca Marinelli.
Fans can stream The Old Guard and its sequel via Netflix.
