Chicago Fire Season 14 Dares To Do What Casey’s Most Controversial Plot Failed To Accomplish

Okay, so heads up – spoilers for the latest Chicago Fire episode, “Piece the Vein”! As a longtime fan, I’m really surprised by something NBC is trying. It feels like they’re attempting to accomplish something that Matt Casey’s storyline never quite managed. The show is settling in after some big changes, and it’s cool to see Chicago Fire – the original One Chicago series – building new relationships within Firehouse 51. Losing key characters over the past few seasons felt natural, and it’s definitely opened the door for some fresh faces and a bit of a revamp.

Even with changes over time, the strength of Chicago Fire and the other shows in the One Chicago franchise remains its compelling characters. While shows like Law & Order often focus on the cases themselves, One Chicago prioritizes the personal lives and relationships of its characters. This creates a more emotionally driven and dramatic version of the typical procedural format. The members of Firehouse 51 each have their own ongoing storylines, and some of these have proven to be quite divisive among viewers.

Casey’s Love Triangle With Dawson & Brett Was Messy

Love has always been a big part of Chicago Fire. We’ve seen plenty of romances blossom at Firehouse 51, from Kelly Severide’s past as a ladies’ man to Mouch and Trudy Platt’s happy marriage. But perhaps the most complicated love story belongs to Casey, who went through a messy breakup and divorce with Gabby Dawson, only to later find love with Sylvie Brett – a close friend of his ex-wife.

Look, everyone pretty much saw the writing on the wall with Casey and Gabby’s divorce, especially after Monica Raymund left Chicago Fire. But honestly, Casey ending up with Brett still gets fans talking. It’s a little complicated because Brett was originally connected to Casey through their mutual friends, and was also friends with Gabby. No matter how you feel about it, that whole storyline was just… a lot. It felt pretty messy, if I’m being honest.

Chicago Fire Season 14 Sets Up A Full-Blown Love Triangle Involving Novak, Vasquez, & Violet

NBC

Because Gabby was no longer around when Casey and Brett’s relationship began on Chicago Fire, the show never had a traditional love triangle. Viewers didn’t get to see the tension build within Firehouse 51 as three colleagues navigated a complicated situation. The characters also avoided the awkwardness of Casey and Brett falling for each other while Gabby was still present.

Season 14 of Chicago Fire appears to be building a new romantic storyline involving Lyla Novak, Violet Mikami, and the latest addition to Firehouse 51, Sal Vasquez. Lyla initially connected with Sal when he joined the team, getting to know him as he adjusted. She previously had a short-lived romance with Jack Damon, Benny Severide’s son. More recently, Violet and Sal have become closer, and their connection was prominently featured in the midseason finale of Chicago Fire season 14.

Similar to Gabby and Brett, Novak and Violet are also paramedics working together on Ambulance 61, making them a very tight-knit team. They have the closest professional relationship to the firefighters at Firehouse 51. The connections don’t end there – Vasquez is part of Truck 81, the same truck Casey led before moving to Portland. While the show Chicago Fire could choose to ignore these parallels, it would be interesting to see how the rest of the firehouse responds if the storyline is directly addressed.
