Children Of Blood & Bone Trailer Reveals Paramount’s Epic Fantasy Adaptation Of Best-Selling Novel

The fantasy film Children of Blood and Bone brings magic to life.

At CinemaCon, Paramount Pictures debuted the trailer for its movie adaptation of Tomi Adeyemi’s 2018 fantasy novel, Children of Blood and Bone. The film will be directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, who previously directed The Woman King and The Old Guard. Prince-Bythewood and stars Thuso Mbedu, Damson Idris, Amandla Stenberg, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Regina King all appeared at CinemaCon to promote the film.

My mother used to tell me stories about a powerful force that once kept the land peaceful, but it was stolen one night.

This film takes place in the African fantasy kingdom of Orïsha, where a young woman, played by Thuso Mbedu, embarks on a journey to restore magic that was taken from her ancestors. She’s joined by her brother, played by Tosin Cole, and the king’s children as they fight against a ruling power. The actors and director recently discussed the upcoming movie with fans.

Ejiofor: “Movies like this don’t come around often. It was time for me to be a king.”

Hall: “Black girls deserve to see themselves in worlds of wonder, power, and imagination.”

Prince-Bythewood: “I’m honored to bring this incredible best-selling fantasy book to life.”

Gina Prince-Bythewood is co-writing the screenplay with author Tomi Adeyemi. The film will star Cynthia Erivo, Lashana Lynch, Zackary Momoh, Richard Mofe-Damijo, and Idris Elba. It’s currently planned for release on January 15, 2027. Based on a novel series, this project is expected to become a large-scale fantasy franchise for Paramount Pictures, after spending eight years searching for a studio home.

As a huge fantasy fan, I’ve been following the development of Children of Blood and Bone for a while now. It’s been a bit of a journey – Disney’s Lucasfilm had a shot at it first, but ultimately Paramount landed the rights and is now really moving forward with the project. Will it reach the heights of Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings? That’s a big ask, but honestly, it has a real chance to be a major blockbuster. The book series is already incredibly popular, and with the cast they’re assembling, I think it could be huge at the box office.

This film stands out with its entirely Black cast, bringing a fresh and significant moment to the fantasy genre and paving the way for more diverse representation in Black filmmaking.

Children of Blood and Bone will be released in theaters on January 15, 2027.
