Chilling Verity Trailer Shows Anne Hathaway in Her Most Eerie Role Yet

Anne Hathaway is giving a bone-chilling performance in Verity.

Anne Hathaway, known for her role in The Devil Wears Prada, gives what many are calling her most unsettling performance yet as author Verity Crawford in the new movie based on Colleen Hoover’s novel—and the recently released trailer confirms it’s a truly chilling role.

The scene opens with author Lowen Ashleigh (Dakota Johnson) walking through the shadowy hallways of the house she shares with Verity and her husband, Jeremy Crawford (Josh Hartnett).

Lowen was hired by Jeremy to complete the manuscript of a book Verity couldn’t finish after an accident. When she arrives, Lowen finds Verity asleep in the bedroom and walks over to where Jeremy is waiting on the couch.

She sits on top of him, and they start kissing intensely, but the moment is interrupted when Lowen breaks away.

Lowen has a disturbing hallucination where she sees Verity staring back at her, wearing a creepy smile. When Lowen attempts to pull away, Verity unexpectedly grabs her head and forces a kiss upon her. Lowen eventually breaks free, but Verity cuts her mouth in the struggle.

Clearly disturbed by the mind games, Lowen lets out a blood-curdling scream. 

The preview quickly shows scenes from the movie, featuring Verity glancing nervously over her shoulder, Lowen running through the snow, and Verity secretly watching Lowen and Jeremy together.

Quick cuts show disturbing images: broken glass, blood swirling down a drain, and a frightening scene of Verity seemingly watching Lowen from inside her own home.

Verity’s voice echoes, ‘Even though I’ve warned you, you’ll still listen to what I have to say. Just understand this: there’s no hope where this is leading, only darkness.’

Coming to theaters on October 2nd, this movie is the second adaptation of a novel by Colleen Hoover. Her book It Ends With Us, starring Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni, was previously adapted into a film released in 2024.

The movie Verity is based on Colleen Hoover’s popular novel of the same name. The story follows Lowen Ashleigh, a writer who is hired to complete the book series of injured author Verity Crawford. While working at the Crawford’s home, Lowen discovers Verity’s private autobiography, filled with disturbing confessions. She debates whether to show it to Verity’s husband, Jeremy, especially as she begins to fall for him. So far, the movie appears to closely follow the plot of the book. According to Variety, the story centers around Lowen uncovering a hidden manuscript that reveals shocking secrets about the family, forcing her to decide if the writings are fiction or a terrifying warning about Verity’s true nature.

But yes, it’s official! Amazon MGM Studios announced in November 2024 that the Devil Wears Prada star will play the main character in Verity.

Although Anne hasn’t publicly confirmed the news, she was seen on set in February 2025. Author Colleen Hoover has expressed her excitement about having the Oscar-winning actress – who is also a producer on the film – involved.

Hoover wrote on Facebook in November, “Verity is coming to theaters and I am so excited for this cast and the script and the director and the whole team bringing this to life. Cannot wait. More coming soon!”

Exciting news quickly followed, and fans were thrilled to learn in December 2024 that Dakota Johnson would be joining the cast as Lowen Ashleigh. Like the author of the book, Dakota will also be a producer on the film. She even runs a book club as part of her search for great stories for her production company, TeaTime Pictures.

She told Bustle in March 2024 that she always thought her reading style was unique, especially compared to those in book clubs. She explained she loves to become fully immersed in a book, deeply connecting with the story, the writing, and any allusions it contains.

Along with the announcement of the Dakota cast, producers also confirmed that Josh Hartnett will play Jeremy Crawford.

Like his fellow actors, Hartnett (Black Hawk Down) hasn’t shared much about Verity. However, he was spotted filming scenes with Anne in February.

Once the three lead actors were announced, Colleen Hoover shared her excitement on Instagram in December, saying she was “beyond excited.”

Michael Showalter is directing and producing a new film called Verity, working alongside Anne and several other collaborators. Showalter and Anne previously teamed up for the 2024 movie The Idea of You. The current script for Verity is written by Nick Antosca, known for his work on TV series like Candy and The Act. Earlier versions of the script were also contributed by Colleen, Lauren Levine, Hillary Seitz, Angela LaManna, Will Honley, and April Maguire.

Filming for Verity was underway in Queens, New York in February 2025, with Josh and Anne spotted on set. Anne, known for The Princess Diaries, wore a sheer white dress with a belt, sunglasses, and leopard-print heels for one scene. Josh, previously in Black Mirror, was dressed in a navy suit with a gray shirt, brown belt, and matching shoes.

The pair were also photographed filming a cheerful scene where they were running together. Josh wore a white shirt, black pants, and a bow tie, while Anne carried his suit jacket.

 

In April 2025, Anne confirmed that filming finished.

 

The movie is slated to hit theaters Oct. 2, 2026.
