Chris Evans Returns to Marvel in Avengers: Doomsday Trailer

Chris Evans is once again ready to assemble alongside the Avengers.

More than five years after Chris Evans passed on the role of Captain America to Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson, a recent trailer for the new Avengers: Doomday movie shows he’ll be returning as Steve Rogers.

A new trailer revealed that Steve Rogers will be back in Avengers: Doomsday, scheduled for release on December 18, 2026.

The trailer opens with Steve riding a motorcycle on a country road, eventually arriving at a house. We then see quick glimpses of him wearing a wedding ring and holding a baby, offering a peek into his life after choosing to stay in the mid-20th century with Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) at the end of Avengers: Endgame.

Steve later opens an old crate and carefully takes out his Captain America suit, hinting at events in the next movie.

As a huge Captain America fan, I was absolutely thrilled to hear Chris is coming back! It’s such a wonderful surprise. He’d previously hinted that returning to Marvel would be a big decision, especially with everything going on in his personal life – he and Alba Baptista welcomed their baby girl in October, which is amazing news – so it’s really exciting that he’s decided to reprise the role.

He told GQ in 2023 that while he doesn’t rule out revisiting the experience, which he described as wonderful, he’s very protective of it. He’s incredibly proud of what happened and still sometimes finds it hard to believe it actually did. He doesn’t want to risk damaging its legacy by doing something that feels like a cynical money-making attempt, doesn’t meet fans’ expectations, or doesn’t feel true to the original. For now, he says, it’s not something he’s planning to do anytime soon.

Chris also pretended to be disappointed earlier this year when he said he was upset about missing out on filming the new Marvel movie with Anthony, Sebastian Stan, Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, and others.

He told ScreenRant in June that while he misses being with the band, he’s confident they’re doing great things. He added that it will likely be difficult to experience their new work knowing he wasn’t involved.

It looks like Chris did get an invitation after all. Keep reading to find out about more movies coming soon…
