A new film starring Oscar winners Mikey Madison (recognized this year for her acting) and Jessica Chastain (known for Zero Dark Thirty), alongside Oscar nominee Josh Brolin, has been confirmed for the upcoming American Film Market. Chris Pine, famous for playing Captain Kirk in the Star Trek movies, also joins the impressive cast of My Darling California.
It’s confirmed that Elijah Byrnum, known for Magazine Dreams, is directing a new film called My Darling California. The movie is a dark comedy crime thriller and features a strong cast including Madison, Chastain, Brolin, Oscar-nominee Don Cheadle (from The Falcon and the Winter Soldier), and Charles Melton, who you may know from Riverdale.
The upcoming film, My Darling California, is set in Los Angeles and tells the story of how one crime connects the lives of several people – a TV host, his wife, a country music star, a pair of petty criminals, and a former convict – as they all strive for a better life. David Hinojosa of 2AM is producing the film, with Zach Nutman of 2AM as executive producer. Production is slated to begin in 2026, and the project is a collaboration between 2AM and Anton.
Director Bynum is joined by Chase Irvin (known for BlacKkKlansman) as the Director of Photography, editor Leslie Jones (The Master), production designer Judy Becker (The Brutalist), and costume designer Erin Benach (Drive). Bynum gained recognition with the 2017 A24 film Hot Summer Nights, featuring Timothée Chalamet and Maika Monroe, and followed that with the 2023 film Magazine Dreams starring Jonathan Majors.
David Hinojosa praised Elijah as a remarkably talented new filmmaker, stating that My Darling California confirms his potential. He expressed excitement about collaborating with the film’s cast to realize Elijah’s creative vision and deliver a memorable cinematic experience. Sebastian Raybaud of Anton agreed, describing Elijah’s writing as captivating and highlighting his unique ability to blend emotional storytelling with large-scale visuals, making My Darling California a perfect example of his skill.
Details about the cast of My Darling California haven’t been released yet. However, Jessica Chastain’s upcoming Apple TV+ series will feature her as an undercover investigator nicknamed “The Savant,” who investigates online hate groups. The Savant was originally scheduled to launch on Apple TV+ on September 26th, but the premiere was postponed following the death of conservative podcaster Charlie Kirk. Currently, there’s no new date for when the show will be released.
The New Movie Comes Days After Star Trek 4 Was Shelved
Chris Pine, known for his role as Captain Kirk in the recent Star Trek films, is involved with a project called My Darling California. A recent report analyzing the first 100 days of Paramount’s new CEO, David Ellison, suggests that future Star Trek movies continuing the Kelvin Timeline are unlikely.
According to a recent report, a new Star Trek movie is still planned, but the studio is no longer considering bringing back the original cast from the J.J. Abrams films. Abrams oversaw the production of those movies – 2009’s Star Trek, Star Trek Into Darkness (2013), and Star Trek Beyond (2016).
My Darling California will head into production next year.
