Netflix is kicking off the New Year with some exciting content, including new releases starring Christian Bale and Matt Damon.
The 2019 racing movie, Ford v Ferrari, which starred those two actors and was directed by James Mangold, is now available on Netflix. As of January 2, 2026, it’s quickly become popular, landing at number 5 on the list of the top 10 movies in the U.S.
The Oscar-winning racing movie starring Christian Bale and Matt Damon became available on Netflix on January 1st. Released by 20th Century Fox, the film did well in theaters, earning $225 million despite a production budget of around $97.6 million.
The film tells the real story of Carroll Shelby and Ken Miles, a designer and driver who teamed up to challenge Ferrari at the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans race. It was an uphill battle, as Ford had little racing experience compared to Ferrari’s long history of winning.
Critics loved Ford v Ferrari, giving it a 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. They especially praised the exciting racing scenes and the performances of Christian Bale and Matt Damon.
The film was praised for appealing to both racing enthusiasts with its accuracy and general audiences with its inspiring story of an underdog triumph.
ScreenRant praised Ford v Ferrari as a fun and unique sports biography. The review highlighted the film’s exciting racing scenes, which used real stunts and only a small amount of computer-generated imagery to create a truly immersive and realistic experience, capturing the sights and sounds of the racetrack.
As a film buff, I always appreciate when movies really nail the driving sequences, and Ford v Ferrari definitely did. I remember ScreenRant’s 2020 list of best movie drivers highlighting Ken Miles, played by Christian Bale, as a total pro – they called him a ‘maestro behind the wheel’! What really stuck with me was how they described his cornering; they said it looked like watching someone incredibly skilled play a racing video game like Gran Turismo. It was a perfect way to describe his almost unbelievable skill.
The movie Ford v Ferrari was a strong awards contender in 2019, receiving four Oscar nominations and winning awards for Best Film Editing and Best Sound Editing.
Many expected a close race for the Best Actor Oscar between Christian Bale and Matt Damon, but neither of them received a nomination. However, Bale was recognized for his performance with a Golden Globe nomination.
Ford v Ferrari is currently available to stream on Netflix.
