Christina Applegate is planning for her future.
Katey Sagal, known for her role on Married…with Children, has been open about her multiple sclerosis diagnosis since 2021. She recently shared what it’s like to live with the condition day-to-day, including how she often thinks about what the future might hold.
Christina explained on the March 19th episode of NPR’s Wild Card that living with this illness is unpredictable. She emphasized that she had already purchased her burial plots, highlighting her proactive approach to dealing with her health.
The 54-year-old, who is a mother to 15-year-old Sadie and married to Martyn LeNoble, has bought several burial plots. She explained she’s planning for three people to be buried there, but didn’t say who the others would be.
“My friend and I are planning a picnic there,” Christina said. “It’s a really beautiful spot.”
She explained that she needs to choose the tree herself because one will be planted in a sunny spot. She wants to make sure her visitors stay comfortable and don’t get too hot.
The actress from Bad Moms said she’d been wanting this property for a long time, and as soon as it became available, she bought it. She wanted to secure it now so her daughter wouldn’t have to worry about it in the future.
Christina is understandably upset about the uncertainty of her future with multiple sclerosis. She’s focused on preparing for the possibility of things getting worse, and what worries her most is the potential impact on her child – she doesn’t want to cause them pain.
“My kid’s going to be hurt,” she said. “So I get really scared about that.”

Christina, still crying, explained that she was terrified, specifically because of what her daughter might face. She struggled to discuss it, unsure of what the future held and when difficult times might arrive. She felt it could happen at any moment.
Despite being largely confined to bed because of ongoing pain, the Emmy-winning actress had shared that she was determined to keep life as normal as possible, even continuing to drive her daughter, Sadie, to school.
Honestly, spending one-on-one time with her is my absolute favorite thing. As I shared with People magazine a while back, those moments are so precious because they’re the only time we truly get to connect, just the two of us.
She said her main focus was simply getting her passenger to their destination safely and then returning home to rest. That’s all she aimed to do, and that’s what she accomplished.

Christina Applegate shared she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2021.
I wanted to share that I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis a few months ago,” she posted on social media last August. “It’s been a really challenging experience, but I’ve felt so much support from others who understand what it’s like. It hasn’t been easy, but life goes on – unless someone gets in the way!

During her Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony in November 2022 – her first public event since being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis – she playfully announced, ‘Oh, and by the way, I have a disease.’ She then gestured to her bare feet, adding, ‘Did you not notice? I’m not even wearing shoes.’

Christina believes her MS journey actually began “six or seven years” before her 2021 diagnosis.
Oh my god, I was watching Christina Applegate on Good Morning America recently, and she was talking about filming the first season of Dead to Me! She said she kept having these moments where her leg would just give way while they were shooting. But she totally brushed it off at first! She thought it was just exhaustion, or not drinking enough water, or even the weather messing with her. It would happen, then nothing for months, and she didn’t think much of it. It’s just… heartbreaking knowing what was actually going on, and she just kept powering through! I’m obsessed with her and the show, and hearing her talk about it like that… it just gets me right here.
The actress revealed that by the time they were filming the last season of the Netflix series, she needed a wheelchair to get around on set.
“I couldn’t move that far,” she recalled, “so I had to tell everybody because I needed help.”

Christina Applegate, known for her role in Dead to Me, shared a photo of her walking canes and wrote that they’ve become a regular part of her life as she lives with multiple sclerosis.

At the 2023 SAG Awards, Christina delivered a defiant message to multiple sclerosis, accompanied by her daughter Sadie Grace LeNoble: “F U MS.”

After getting a standing ovation at the 2023 Emmys, the former star of Married…With Children joked, “You’re making me feel bad about my disability by all standing up!”

Christina explained on the March 2024 episode of Armchair Expert that making jokes is how she copes with her health condition. She said that if she didn’t use humor, she wouldn’t be able to handle things and it would overwhelm her.

She shared on the podcast that she has 30 lesions in her brain, with the largest one located behind her right eye, causing significant pain.
According to the Multiple Sclerosis Trust, multiple sclerosis happens when the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks the protective covering of nerve fibers.

Christina hasn’t held back when it comes to sharing her journey.
Christina Applegate was honest with Jimmy Kimmel about living with multiple sclerosis. She admitted it’s really difficult, saying, ‘It’s not something anyone would ever want to deal with.’

In a March 2024 interview with Good Morning America, Christina described living with the disease as being “like living in hell.”
She hopes to feel more capable soon. Currently, she’s staying home and avoiding activities because she’s struggling and doesn’t feel up to facing things. It’s a difficult time for her.

Christina Applegate said her Sweetest Thing co-star, Selma Blair, who received a multiple sclerosis diagnosis in 2018, encouraged her to get tested for the condition.
During an interview with Good Morning America, Christina remembered the woman telling her, ‘You should get tested for multiple sclerosis.’ She added that if it hadn’t been for that advice, her condition could have become much more serious.

Christina Applegate has indicated that her role in Dead to Me will probably be the last time she appears on screen. In an interview with Vanity Fair in May 2023, she explained she doesn’t feel able to return to a film or television set at this time.
I likely won’t be appearing on camera again, but I’m incredibly happy I had the chance to work with Linda Cardellini, who I consider to be not only the most talented actress I’ve ever collaborated with, but also one of the most remarkable people I’ve ever met.
