As a huge movie fan, I’ve been hearing about Christy Martin’s life story for ages, and it feels like it was just waiting for the right moment to be shared. Luckily, that moment is almost here – her biopic, simply titled ‘Christy,’ is coming out later this month, and I can’t wait!
The movie tells the story of Martin’s life, from her childhood in West Virginia to her successful career that led to her induction into the Boxing Hall of Fame. It also covers the harrowing experience of being attacked by her husband, James V Martin.
Michôd felt a real thrill at the prospect of Sydney Sweeney playing the character of Christy, as if she would truly embody the role.
I always knew she had incredible talent, and I realized bringing this character to life would be a huge challenge for any actor. It was going to be a real journey, demanding everything she had.
“And she was so up for it, which was great,” Foulkes added.

You know, chatting with these two, it became clear they were both really blown away by Sweeney’s work in the film. What kept coming up? The boxing scenes! They both agreed those were definite highlights, and honestly, I can see why – they really showcased his physicality and commitment to the role.
Foulkes recalled a specific scene early in the movie – a moment that won’t spoil anything – where the main character achieves her first professional knockout in the boxing ring.
It’s one of my favorite parts of the movie. Sydney gives this beautiful, innocent, and surprised smile that really captures what Christy was like when she was younger – full of energy and shocked to discover she was so naturally talented at… well, knocking people out.
“I remember seeing that on the day and going, ‘there she is, there’s Christy Martin.'”
Michôd pointed out similar scenes in the film, explaining, “I also enjoy those moments. I particularly like the action sequences – each fight feels unique and reveals something about Christy’s state of mind at that time.”
It begins with a surprising, almost unbelievable victory, but quickly transforms into something much angrier, fueled by external issues beyond the fight itself.
It’s amazing to watch her, because she actually finds peace when she’s fighting. It sounds crazy, but when she’s in the ring, hitting another woman in front of so many people, she’s completely serene. It’s like all the noise and pressure just fades away for her, and she’s totally at peace in that moment.
It’s no surprise that directors Foulkes and Michôd were impressed with the actor’s dedication. Sweeney has openly discussed how much she changed for the role of Christy Martin, including gaining over 30 pounds to convincingly portray the athlete.
She recently told W Magazine that her body changed significantly, and she couldn’t fit into her usual clothes. She normally wears a size 23 in jeans, but found herself needing a size 27.
“It was crazy! I was like, ‘Oh my god.’ But it was amazing. I was so strong, like crazy strong.”
The series features Sweeney alongside a talented cast including Ben Foster as James V Martin, Christy’s husband, Merritt Wever as her mother, Joyce, Ethan Embry as her father, John Salters, Chad L Coleman as Don King, and Katy O’Brian as Lisa Holewyne.
