Despite our immense grief, we cherish the life he had and the wonderful memories we shared. He was incredibly touched by the love and support of his fans worldwide, and our family is deeply grateful for all of you. He considered you not just admirers, but his friends.
Chuck Norris was born in Ryan, Oklahoma, in 1940. At 18, he joined the Air Force and was sent to South Korea, where he began studying Tang Soo Do. He became proficient in several martial arts, including Karate, Taekwondo, Brazilian jiu jitsu, and judo, continuing his training even after moving into acting. He won martial arts tournaments and opened karate studios with a famous clientele. This ultimately led to a friendship with Bruce Lee, who cast Norris in his first film role in 1972’s The Way of the Dragon.
Chuck Norris quickly became a popular actor after making his film debut. He landed his first leading role in the 1977 film Breaker! Breaker!, which helped launch his career in action movies during the 1980s. This included the successful Missing in Action series of three films, as well as The Delta Force. However, that’s just a glimpse of everything he did – he also appeared in many other action and dramatic films during that period.
During the 1990s, Chuck Norris transitioned to television, starring in the popular series Walker, Texas Ranger. The show, which ran for nine seasons and almost two hundred episodes, was famous for its action-packed stunts and its inclusion of positive moral messages. Years after it ended, a TV movie continued the series.
Just as Chuck Norris was finishing up his run as Cordell Walker on television, something unusual happened: “Chuck Norris facts” began to spread rapidly online. These were funny, exaggerated stories playing on his tough-guy image, like saying he could kill two birds with one stone, or that if you picked up the phone when he was calling, it wasn’t a wrong number—he made you pick up the wrong phone! He even joked about them himself, and in 2009, he gave his approval to a book collecting these humorous “facts.”
More recently, Chuck Norris has remained active in acting, continued to share his passion for martial arts, and dedicated his time to charities such as Funds for Kids, the United Way, and the Make-A-Wish Foundation. His career in action movies led to a role in The Expendables franchise, specifically in the 2013 sequel. A memorable scene earned him the lighthearted title of “one man army,” a fun nod to his long history in the genre.
Our thoughts go out to his family and friends during this time.
