It has been clarified by Cillian Murphy that he will not be playing the role of Lord Voldemort in the upcoming Harry Potter television production, thus quashing any such rumors.
For quite some time, there have been whispers that the actor from Peaky Blinders might take on the role of the villain, a part previously brought to life by Ralph Fiennes in movies, in an upcoming HBO series. Filming for this project commenced in July.
However, during an interview with Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Murphy clarified that although his children had shown him some online discussions, they were not based on fact.
“I don’t know anything about that,” he said.
In addition, it’s quite challenging to keep up with whatever Ralph Fiennes performs. He is undeniably a legendary actor, so best of luck to anyone who takes on the task of stepping into his footsteps.
Additionally, he made a light-hearted comment about his strong attachment to his nose, since in the movies, Voldemort’s nose was shown as flattened with just two openings for nostrils, resembling slits.

In December, the original actor for Voldemort, Fiennes, granted permission to Murphy to assume the notorious role during a live appearance on “Watch What Happens Live.
Cillian is an exceptional actor. I absolutely support the idea of Cillian. Indeed, I am fully on board with that.
Initially, Fiennes made his debut as the malevolent wizard character in the fourth movie adaptation of Harry Potter, titled “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire” from 2005. He then appeared in a total of four more films: “Order of the Phoenix,” “Deathly Hallows Part 1,” and “Deathly Hallows Part 2.”
In an interview with Variety in 2022, a year before HBO announced their new TV adaptation, Fiennes expressed his enthusiasm about reprising the role of Voldemort. He confirmed unequivocally that he would be eager to take on the role again.
The principal actors for the forthcoming TV show have mostly been revealed, encompassing the core trio – Dominic McLaughlin portraying Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout in the role of Ron Weasley.
Among the key characters who have secured their roles are John Lithgow portraying Albus Dumbledore, Nick Frost taking on the part of Hagrid, Janet McTeer essaying Minerva McGonagall, and Paapa Essiedu stepping into the character of Severus Snape.
Or:
The following significant roles have been finalized: John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Nick Frost as Hagrid, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, and Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape.
Or in a more conversational tone:
John Lithgow will play Albus Dumbledore, Nick Frost is set to portray Hagrid, Janet McTeer has been confirmed for Minerva McGonagall, and Paapa Essiedu will take on the role of Severus Snape in this production.
It’s yet to be confirmed who’ll be taking on the role of Voldemort.

As a devoted fan of Harry Potter, I’ve noticed that JK Rowling, the brilliant author behind the series, has been met with some criticism regarding her opinions on transgender rights. In 2020, she shared an extensive statement expressing her views on sex and gender debates, which was met with controversy. Notably, various LGBTQ+ charities, such as Stonewall, have voiced their disagreement with her stance.
J.K. Rowling expressed her opinions via social media platforms as well, with one notable instance being a 2024 post on X (previously Twitter), where she strongly stated that there are no children who identify as transgender and rejected the notion that a child might be born in a body that doesn’t align with their true identity.
By May 2025, JK Rowling established the JK Rowling Women’s Fund, a resource that provides financial assistance for legal support to individuals and organizations advocating for the preservation of women’s rights based on their biological sex.
Actors like Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson, who played iconic roles in Harry Potter, have spoken out against J.K. Rowling’s opinions and expressed their support for the transgender community. On the other hand, actors such as Ralph Fiennes, Helena Bonham Carter, and Jim Broadbent have come to Rowling’s defense amidst the criticism she’s faced.
