Claire Danes recently revealed she believes her short-lived 1990s series, My So-Called Life, shouldn’t have been made. The show, which was cancelled after only one season, starred Danes as Angela Chase, a typical teenager navigating high school, friends, and family—all told through her own perspective. Despite its brief run, the ABC drama also helped launch the careers of actors like Jared Leto and Wilson Cruz.
On this week’s episode of the Good Hang with Amy Poehler podcast, Claire Danes discussed how her show, My So-Called Life, still connects with audiences today. Amy Poehler brought up the show and asked Claire about why her character remains relatable to modern viewers.
It’s still groundbreaking and feels incredibly modern. The film faced numerous challenges during its creation and almost didn’t happen at all, yet it powerfully comes to life. We rarely get such a close and personal look at the life of a teenage girl.
I was deeply moved when I first read the script before the audition. It was incredibly powerful to see a woman, Winnie Holzman, so accurately capture my inner thoughts and feelings in her writing. The story is told entirely from her perspective, and she honestly grapples with important life questions. It’s a beautifully balanced show that truly feels like her. The writing is sharp and witty, with some fantastic lines. I feel very lucky that this was the project that brought me into the world of acting.
Even though only 19 episodes of My So-Called Life were ever made, it’s still incredibly well-regarded. In fact, Rotten Tomatoes gives it a 94% rating – much higher than popular shows like Friends (74%) and other similar series from that time. Good news for fans: reports suggest the people who created the original show are working on a new project together.
‘My So-Called Life’ Team Working on HBO Series

Netflix
In February 2025, Variety announced that Claire Danes, the acclaimed actress, and Micah Holzman were developing a new drama series for HBO called The Applebaum Curse. Danes will star in and executive produce the show, while Holzman will write and serve as showrunner. The series is a one-hour drama that follows a complicated family, with Danes in the leading role.

Writer and screenwriter Holly Holzman, known for her work on Wicked and Wicked: For Good, and for appearing as Dr. Slavin in an episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm, recently explained why she hadn’t tried to bring back My So-Called Life after all these years. Her answer is intriguing, though it’s currently unknown how far along her new project, The Applebaum Curse, actually is.
That’s a great question! I’m actually developing a project I’d love to do with Claire Danes. It’s not a revival of anything we’ve done before, but getting Claire and me back together on screen would feel a bit like that, in a way. It’s a brand new story, and we’re both really hoping it works out.
