Classic Animated Character Finally Getting a Solo Movie After 70 Years & Multiple Failed Attempts

After over 50 years of abandoned plans and unsuccessful tries, someone is giving this cartoon character another shot at a comeback. He last appeared briefly in the 2021 film Space Jam: A New Legacy.

Good news for animation fans! Warner Bros. is reportedly developing a new animated movie starring Speedy Gonzalez, the famously fast mouse from Mexico. Director Jorge R. Gutiérrez will be at the helm. Details about the story and who’s writing the script are currently being kept secret. This isn’t the first attempt – Warner Bros. previously started a Speedy Gonzalez movie in 2016 with Eugenio Derbez set to voice the character, but it was canceled due to concerns about potentially offensive content.

So What Do We Know?

To be honest, there isn’t much news yet. Last month, director Gutiérrez hinted at a new project on social media, posting a picture of himself with a Speedy Gonzales figurine and wearing clothes to match the character. He captioned the post, “Any guesses what movie I might be working on at Warner Bros. Animation…?” The comments section exploded with excitement, with many fans saying a Speedy Gonzales movie was long overdue and that Gutiérrez deserved the opportunity.

Jorge Gutiérrez is the perfect choice to direct the new film. He’s a highly talented animator, writer, producer, and director – well-known for creating El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera and directing the critically acclaimed animated film The Book of Life. Bill Damaschke, president of Warner Bros. Pictures Animation, told The Hollywood Reporter that Gutiérrez is a unique storyteller whose artistic vision and cultural background bring a fresh and timeless quality to his work. Warner Bros. is thrilled to have him reimagine Speedy Gonzales for a modern, worldwide audience.
