Capcom recently announced a new Onimusha game, Onimusha: Way of the Sword, marking the first new installment in the series for two decades. While Capcom has been working to make some older Onimusha titles available on current gaming systems, it appears one game will remain playable only on its original hardware, meaning a remake or remaster is unlikely.
Capcom recently announced that Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams will be available on PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 in August. This is the newest game in the Onimusha series and is launching shortly before the release of Way of the Sword. It’s the third Onimusha title to be updated for modern consoles, following remasters of Onimusha: Warlords in 2018 and Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny in 2025.
It’s good news that Dawn of Dreams is coming to PlayStation consoles, but it’s strange Capcom chose that game over Onimusha 3: Demon Siege. Onimusha 3, released in 2004, is a fan favorite thanks to its story and gameplay. Despite many requests, Capcom hasn’t remastered, remade, or even ported it to modern platforms. Choosing to revive Dawn of Dreams instead of Onimusha 3 is a bit disappointing for fans.
It’s probably difficult to remaster Onimusha 3 because of licensing issues. The game features Jean Reno, a well-known actor, as a new character named Jacques Blanc. Getting permission to use his likeness and voice likely creates more challenges for Capcom than with other Onimusha games.
Although a new version of Onimusha 3: Demon Siege could potentially happen in the future, Capcom’s recent actions suggest it’s unlikely. If you’re planning to play through the entire Onimusha series before Onimusha: Way of the Sword releases on September 25th, you might need to find a PlayStation 2 to play Onimusha 3.
