Sophie Aldred, known for her role in Doctor Who, is starting a new podcast that will bring together actors from both the original and newer versions of the show.
The podcast, Ace Odyssey, will explore fandoms, creative expression, and the fascinating people behind popular culture each week.
The actress is hosting a gathering for fans of Doctor Who, bringing together stars like Sylvester McCoy, Katy Manning, Susan Twist, Janet Fielding, Sally Knyvette, Nicholas Briggs, and David Banks.
The podcast begins on November 23rd at 5:15pm – a date chosen to celebrate the anniversary of the very first Doctor Who episode. The first guest will be Sylvester McCoy, who played the Seventh Doctor, and new episodes will be released every Sunday.
Aldred expressed his excitement about launching a unique addition to the science fiction fan community and the world of podcasts.
It’s amazing how much of an impact Doctor Who has had on people’s lives and careers, and I’m excited to share many touching and inspiring stories with our audience.
Aldred starred as Ace from 1987 to 1989, and was the final companion in the classic series.
She explained that there weren’t any characters like Ace on television back then – there was a real lack of female representation in popular shows. As a result, Ace has inspired a lot of people, especially, she believes, the strong female characters we see in sci-fi today.
Looking back, it’s striking how different things were before ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer.’ Young women were typically relegated to minor roles or simply portrayed as girlfriends. A strong, female lead like Buffy was truly exceptional at the time.
I believe the change in how women were portrayed stems from script editor Andrew Cartmel. He brought in new writers who were familiar with comic books, where female characters were often depicted in a surprisingly relatable way – not necessarily in their appearance, but in their personalities and emotional depth.
“So, I think I’m just so privileged to have played that part.”
